So, recently purchased a 1996 S280. As i cant find a definitive answer on if 1996 onward or 1997 onward is 'safe' with respect to updated wiring harness, i have been inspecting my wiring harness/loom.

I have to say, that my car was either manufactured with the later harness or has had a new harness - As there is no degradation to any of the wires.

However, during my inspection i was looking at the section of loom and connectors around the fuel injectors, and i noticed this random wire/connection along with the brown wire - Neither connected to anything??

The connector has an MB part number of 012 545 40 28

S280 M104 oil leaks from oil cooler and power steering pump. - Mercedes-Benz Forum
My guess its a replacement loom and as such will incorporate " all possible extra equipment found in later/other models" That engine was also found in the W210 E class for example.
If there's no obvious electrical component to connect to and everything is working as it should I wouldn't worry.

The plug coupler on the right looks similar to the one on the solenoid for inlet cam advance adjustment, no idea about the ring crimp one. Could it be that some egr equipment has been removed and these a redundant after that?

My cars a 99 s320 & its also got that plastic plug by your cars dipstick. I was also wondering what its for

If your car has a air pump fitted there is a vacuum valve bolted to the front upper timing cover, I'll bet it should go to that.
