1991 sl300-24 project,s124 280,w115 no interior, w108 project no engine
I bought this today to break it (I wanted the engine). 300se24v
I hadn't considered the fact that it may be too good to break, which it very well may be.
102k miles, 11mths mot, taxed, manual leather seats and no a/con. Lovely colour, drives well (if i sort the vibration-see other thread). The only significant things are a small amount of arch bubbling on the nsf wing and it wants a good clean. Lost s/history seemingly (and dealer wasnt bothered) but I think its been cared for and I will be looking into the history as it drives "tight" apart from the vibe.

What do the members think its worth?

I forgot to say, cheers to Andy for pointing me in the right direction.

The prices seem to be totally varied at the moment. One similar to mine in every way (inc mileage) but with good wings is advertised for just under £3k

I'm going for £1200, any less it get's broken for spares.

Nice W140, tbh i think you would get more if you break it. As for the Vibration it could simply be the tyre pressure. Reccomended for W140 is 27PSI front & 28 PSI Rear, give that a try before you do anything else:o

They do seem to vary hugely - anything from a few hundred for a rough one to a few grand for a really nice one - pretty much on a par with W126's - only good 126's are now that much harder to find , only brcause of age and mileage .

I'd be reluctant to break that too .

Guess re the vibration , I'd be looking at the usual suspects : wheel balance first , propshaft couplings , tyres .

Doesn't that have the later 320 engine rather than a 300-24?

I didn't realise they did a '300-24' 140 either!

with the last two posts i'm now worried...

John, you can tell by just looking at the engine....post a picture up or email it to me..

If it has a distributor on the front of the engine , it is a 300-24 ; no distributor and it is a 280 or a 320

My 300TE-24 engine - distributor under plastic cover at front end .

And a pic of DEL 320's (very clean) engine bay - his car being a 320CE W124

DVLA list it as a 3.2 litre.

Maybe someone has put the wrong badge on ?

Sold mine a couple of years back, 95 S500 Coupe, 73000 miles, FSH, 3 owners, £2350. I wish I had broken it, it would have no doubt been worth more for parts (the Alloy Bonnet alone costs almost 2k)

dvla listing indeed as 3.2 litre. Not a happy bunny at all now as seemingly (from a previous thread) the thought of a change to a 320 from a 300-24 is not worth the aggro

:(

I expect you can give it a little TLC and sell it on for at least what you paid for it ?

What was it advertised as?

300se 24v which is whats on the logbook. missed the 3199cc.
real ****up this is as i had decided last night 100% to break it.

sure i cant use engine now.

If it is as nice a car as you say , it would be a shame to break it .

Possibly worth giving it a clean up , see if you can sort out the vibration with a minimum of expenditure , perhaps find out if there is any history on the MB database - then perhaps you can sell it on and make enough on it to make your efforts worthwhile ?

An ad on this forum and the official club forum won't cost you anything and might just find a buyer .

If no takers , then breaking would always be an option , however I suspect , like me , that you hate to see a good car being broken when it can be saved ?

Can you take it back to the dealer & get your £££ back?

Well it looks like an early '300-24' M104 to me?

Maybe it's had an engine swap at some point, or else it's very unusual - strange that it's referred to as a '300SE' but with 3199cc?

Will
