Hi all I have a quick question regarding the operation of the manual parking brake on my 2001 ML320 not sure its working as it should.

Basically when I operate the brake using the foot pedal it engages with a rather loud clunk as the pedal moves through the length of its travel. It works perfectly well but this noise does not seem normal I recall on my W220 it operated as a smooth ratchet until it was fully applied. The clunk occurs about halfway through the pedals travel.

The car has recently been serviced and this was not picked up as a fault however it does not seem right to me especially compared to other Mercedes cars I have owned. Could anyone offer any advice on whether this is in fact “normal” operation or if not, what I could check to try and diagnose?

Hoping that there is a way to lubricate a cable or linkage!

Thanks

Our W163 has the ratchety clicks but has never been smooth, even when the car was just 12 months old.

Some time ago the feel changed: it developed a soft clunk after a few ratchety clicks - I can't remember what the cause was, but it was fixed at the dealer.

Possibly adjustment as I don't recall actually paying anything and I doubt the warranty would pay as a cable would presumably be wear/tear unless very new?

Thats it!

A soft clunk after a few ratchety clicks.... Just been in for am "A" service and they didn't mention this. I wonder what they did to yours to fix it!

Did it happen before the service?

Reason I ask is that it may be part of a standard service to check and adjust.

It may be that they did adjust it and caused another problem whilst doing it. Or it may be that they should have done it but didn't!!

Yes it was there before the service.....

I will call the garage and ask them, but if its just something simple to adjust I would prefer to do it myself.
