W163 ML400 CDi and clicking noise when hot.Timing chain?HELP!

Hi there,
3 years ago the car would make a clicking noise in the first 3-5 secs since start coming form the engine.Later that 5 secs the engine sounded OK.I was told by a couple of service MB dealers that it was something with the oils not going up intime and that it should not bother me.Note that if i step the throtle in the first seconds the clicking sound would go away before the 5 secs.
Before 6 months while climbing a hill with the car,i could hear something rattling.Happened only at about 1500-1700rpm while throtling.If i reved up more the rattling would go away.Because of the frequence sound,I thought it was the CATS touching each other as it had happened to me before with my SLK.I didnt paid attention waiting for the time i had to service my car to get the cats looked at,and today the car when it gets hot it makes the clickng - rattling sound when at idle , and when at 1500-1700 rpm.The sound gets worse when the car makes an effort to drive an uphill road.
The car eats oil about a liter every 10.000km and last time the dealer used 5w 30.I used two halfliters since the oil change one 5w 40 and one 10w 40.altough i think the second time the oil lamp light up and told me that it needs oil,i may have purred more oil than needed.It needed lets say half a kilo and i put in the whole one kilo bottle.Today 4.000km before service indicator i want to take it to my service dealer.Is it safe to drive it 300km to reach him?Local indys told me that the sound comes from the chosper ,a brake pump screwed on the enigne to the front left upper part of the V8 engine and it is gangerous to brake and then i would not have brakes.Other indy told me it is the timing chain and that if it brakes the engine would be totaled.but then again i read that no w163 has ever changed the timming chain.
What would you suggest?I would like to get to my dealer well informed.

Note that no engine light has showed up my dash.
ps:how much oil do my engine takes?I cannot find such an information the internet.

thank you for the information.But i cannot make a good translation on the finnish.
Can you tell me does this site show an OM628 engine without the skip protection and under thispicture the same engine with the skip protection?What do they say in total?Do they had to change the timming chain?

Timing chain uses "balancing axle" also.
Chain can jump over one step, if it does not have that protection.
It causes strange sound and vibration.
But is easy to repair, just put there that piece.
 
hi there community.
just got the truck from the repair shop.First fact is that the skip protection is present on all ML400 cdi engines made in 2002 and onward.
Second fact is that every 100.000km / 80.000 miles the timing chain has to be replaced on this ML 400 cdi v8 OHM 628 engine.The first indicator on the problem is the clicking sound on every cold start up of the engine.My car at 170.000km and after all merc official service point denying to repair my car two years now from when the sound came in about 115.000km and today i had a screw of the slider that keeps the chain in track broken and thus the noisy crank i describe above.
Finally the mechanic had to take off the timming chain covers,the diesel evaporators,all radiators,the front belt and the headlights to have access to the sliders and syncro the timming chain.
Painfull and timefull job all have been avoiding.
Total cost 700euros for parts - 500euros for labor.
Oil quality has nothing to do with the timming chain.
today after 2000km and the car drives beautifully.
onto the roads once more.

I have ML 400 CDI.. My problem is similar as yours. Last three weeks when I start my ML for 3-5 sec some strange clicking coming out from engine but when engine is hot no clicking at all. My questions is: which parts did you change on your ML, how much they cost any fotos form that proces .Help will be much appreciated from all of you guys. Thank you.

My ML 400 CDI SUV got 154 000 km and so far no problems at all.
Looks like timing chain need to be changed but what about sliders does they need to be changed aswell ???
Any photos or servis manuals with complit proces???
