Well the power steering in the new ML seems to be a little dodgy, so after some idea folks.

Symptoms: It seems to not center very quickly after going round corners.

Also when parking it seems to either be very light or quite heavy.

So I wanted to check the levels, but couldn't find the reservoir or pump.

Does anybody know where it is on a W163 ML500.

If it needs a new pump, is it DIY and any idea of cost?

Also the last time this car saw MB was in June 03, and I understand there was a recall on the ML around power steering after this.

Does anybody know any more about this?

Well I managed to find it, just in front of the oil filter. The levels were on the minimum side, so I topped it up, and it seems to be better at standstill. Self centreing still seems a bit slow.

I also checked with the Dealer about the recall, and the recall does not affect this Vin number.

So will keep an eye on it I suppose.

Does anybody have a view if it is just the hydraulic fluid, or is it more serious? Would anything show up on STAR?

Thanks in advance.

Minimal or non existant 'self centreing' seems to be a feature on all ML's............the recall affected earlier ml's regarding a steering hose that wasnt secured properly (or something like that).
