Done lots of searching - new to Mercs with tech (last one was a W123 200T!!) got a W164 ML500 10/2005 a week last Friday
I love to drive and I love to drive with music - not too worried about phone capability. I suspect I can't connect my Google Pixel2 to my headunit via bluetooth without a bluetooth puck connected to the handset port in the centre console from what I've read so far.
Currently I have a bluetooth adapter plugged into the aux port which works fine BUT would love to get rid of it and use native BT. I've removed the cradle and get as far as Bluetooth Connected and after about 10 secs comes up Not Connected (so close!!). I am seeing 2 devices on my phones pairing screen - 1 has a bluetooth symbol next to it and is an ethernet address (headphones port?). When I click on that it flicks through pairing real quick and doesn't seem to do anything more. I edited the second to "ML500 BT" early on and it has a phone handset symbol next to it. This is the one that is showing connected then not connected after a few seconds. I tried several codes 0000/1234/62872, in both ends, phone & headunit - none get any further.
My DVD is V4. I've just ordered V19 with V12 upgrade. Is there any chance the V12 upgrade will make it more BT friendly and compatible with a reasonably modern android phone..... for music ?
Apologies for lengthy post but fast tracking to MercTech with regards to "all this $h!T" !!!

First up if you are buying a genuine V19 disk you dont need the V12 disk. Beware of EbAy sellers offering copied disks. They will cause your Comand unit to run hot.

The Bluetooth option you have found on the NTg2 headunit is not designed for any phone. You will never get it to work.

NTG2 comand only supports bluetooth phone if you have the Mercedes HFP, SAP or viseeo BT cradle connected to the UHI connector in the centre armrest. None of these options support any BT music. For that you will need a separate media device on the fibre bus. Cost circa £500 fitted.

Many thanks for that Alfie, much appreciated - saves me wasting any more time on it. In that case I'll definitely stick with my BT adapter (£5) in the aux socket as it's only music I'm interested in. I'm also used to using Waze on my mobile for route planning / management so probably won't use the Nav system, although I do love the fact she finishes each instruction off with please and is very civil - nice touch.
Do all of the copied (rather than genuine ) disks cause the unit to run hot and what is this? - never heard of it before.
And, is this disk specifically for the GPS/Navigation facility or is it for the whole system ? i.e. - if I'm not using Nav/Map can I use the radio /aux without a disk in ? - I will try this later but thought I'd ask anyway.
Thanks again

LXA, please see this thread 2007 W164 COMAND Aux input I've just posted. Like me, you have a pre-facelift W164 with an Aux socket. Could you be so kind as to confirm the socket details for me - how many separate contacts are there on the pin, and is the socket powered (i.e. active Aux) or input only?

We cannot PM each other, or I'd do that.

Thank you for the reply on the other thread. If I could trouble you a little further, could you tell me how many contact bands you have on the jack plug that goes into the socket in the car?

The Aux lead has four wires on it and three contact bands. It is not active (Powered).

In my experience over many years, the copied disks do not have the same reflectivity that the genuine disks have. Users report, and I have seen myself, many read retries and occurrences of the unit reporting no DVD found when the disk is in the there. Touching the outside of the casing reveals the unit is getting hot. If you don't want to pay for an up to date genuine disk then get a slightly older genuine one which will be cheaper but far more reliable. Genuine disks have the necessary firmware update on them rather than needing to use an interim version first.

If you are not using the navigation then the disk can be removed from the unit and the slot used to play music CD's.

Alfie, thank you very much. I'm all at sea on the nitty-gritty of this sort of thing...

Could I ask a couple of questions? Firstly, regarding the aux socket, am I right in thinking that if I can find an SD card reader/player (probably battery-powered) with a 3.5mm jack socket for output, all I need is a connecting cable with a male plug on both ends and I'm good to go? I'm assuming the wiring connections between the two male plugs will be an industry standard that MB uses. If the connecting cable has four-pole plugs (seem to be much more common; almost ubiquitous, in fact), will that be a problem?

And one more, regarding the nav update disc, if I may. I have a V19 in mine, but is there any easy way to tell whether it's genuine or a copy?

Again - many thanks for that Alfie..... I'd ordered a copy from fleabay before getting my query answered here by your good self, that's on the way. Following your comments I contacted my local merc dealer to see if they could do anything reasonably priced and they've offered me the latest at £99, which I believe is very reasonable (?) ..... but having said all that I'll probably be sticking with tried and trusted Waze on my phone .... and bluetooth adapter for music via the aux port

Confirming what Alfie said - just had a quick look, 3 contact bands on the jack plug

Thank gents. One cheapo Chinese MP3 player and one £1.99 1 metre extension lead later, and it all works fine.

Well, until the third time I switched it on, and the poxy player went t1ts-up... Back it goes, back comes £10, and another player ordered (different unit, different seller, even cheaper :D). If that's duff - it probably won't be; most of the Chinese stuff works OK, at least for a while - I'll try another.

Sorted, so thank you again.
