DSW, it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway.

If you drill a hole in the metalwork, it needs to be rust-primed and painted, or in a few months there'll be a large area of rust taking hold...

There are rubber bungs (grommets) underneath the foam box that hold the jack etc. Remove the foam box, remove a grommet and see the ground. No drilling required. The floor is high enough off the road and not any where near the wheels that water will get in only out. I removed the 2 centre one and made sure that the bung holes has a good layer of paint on the edges.

Pour some water in and look under the car and you will see it drain away.

Hello,

Thanks topside, I thought that was the case after looking into it a bit more, attached some pics for other users if this happens to them, the metal plate underneath the grommet is some sort of metal plate that covers the exhaust pipe.

I can see the pictures now, but I can't see any (obvious) tracks of water.

Mind, my eyesight isn't up to much...

Every bloody car I've owned has let liquid out when it's supposed to stay in, and let it in when it's supposed to stay out!

So far, the ML seems to be bucking the trend, though it mists-up suspiciously easily. That's normally a sign of water leaks soaking the carpets...

I can't find the source of any leaks into mine either. The light cluster seals were a recall/warranty item apparently.

What I do do is chuck in any of those little silicon sachets that you get with new electrical goods! I have quite a collection going on in there now. :D

I've tried to point to the source with the lines. It seems to be from the joints of the panels. The problem with the leaks in the boot is there can be no water in the boot after a rain storm. But then drive a short distance and the boot will have quite a lot in. It's as if a box section has been filled with water and when driven it's come out of the joints. I don't want to seal these openingsites because last could be just sealing the water in a box section.
I would like to think someone knows the construction.

I don't understand your recall point. The leak isn't from the lights!

Clearly MB think at least one source of the leaks are from the rear light seals.

Rarer, but not unknown are leaks from the rear quarter light windows. There is a plastic locating peg that is occasionally troublesome. It's a cut the window out job to rectify.

The 3rd brake lights on the tailgate leak and the water runs down the sides of the door and out the bottom of it into the boot.
I've done loads.

Hi,gaz & alibally
Thanks for the interest but both of your leaks would surely run down the panels and into either the boot or the boot well? Mine unfortunately is coming from between the two panels joins.
The boot one in particular is from the sort of breather openings I've tried to point to.
I'm sick of not having any boot coverings etc but it's looking more and more I'm going to have to live with it or just seal the joints I can see and wait until it all rusts from the inside!
PLEASE KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING.
Thanks (in the hope someone can solve this )
Gerry
