I've just replaced the foam rubbery seal on the RH rear light cluster, brand new part from MB Newcastle; just had a cloudburst, and the poxy thing is STILL leaking. The seal was fitted with the glue side facing outwards, but I assume that's only to locate it while it is bolted up, because it's the same part number for both sides. I tried silicone sealant before buying and fitting the new part; that didn't work either. Is there anywhere else it could be getting in? I can't see anywhere.

One thing I did notice was that with the new seal in place, the actual cluster is about 2-3 mm more proud of the rear bodywork than with the old seal, though all the nuts are done up tightly enough. There's definitely nothing trapped that could be causing this, though, so it must surely be just the new seal compressing less than the old one; I can't see any other explanation.

Does anybody have a fix for this that actually works? I'm wondering whether to try coating the seal with high-tack gasket sealant, both sides, rather than just LOTS of silicone sealant everywhere on the bodywork/seal interface, including the cutouts for the mounting posts.
