W166 instrument cluster lighting

On my previous W164 ML320 Sport the instrument cluster was lit even when the exterior lights were off but in my W166 ML350 Sport the cluster lights are off unless the exterior lights are on. Is this normal behaviour? I would like to have the cluster lit all the time but can not find a setting for this.
