Hi
Ive recently changed from a 2015 CLS to a 2013 ML350, and having some issue with connecting my phone, i appreciate my old CLS had a newer version of command, so perhaps some of what i am trying to do is not possible but i would like to find out.
1. Cant connect my iPhone 7 directly via USB to play music, blue tooth works fine, however when i plug my phone in via USB i am told the device is not readable, the CLS would play music on my phone when connected via USB show label artwork etc, can i do this still on the ML ?

2. Internet can i connect the phone to use the mercedes apps ? when i try i am told device does not support data connection ? do i have to use the wifi hotspot like i did with CLS

3. SMS ,could read SMS message on the CLS, I can see a SMS menu option at the bottom of the screen when in phone mode, but its greyed out and can't be selected, anyway to change this ?

thanks
Neil

Rather than connect your iPhone to a USB port, you need to connect it to the Media Interface port using a cable like this:

Media Interface cable set for NTG4.5 vehicles MY2013 onward (except SLK)

I notice that neither the Mercedes-Benz Configurator or Command Online websites has the Apple lightning version listed (for iPhone 5 and newer). Contact your main dealer parts counter or better still Command Online for the right cable for your phone and car.

Yes, your Mercedes apps on COMAND can use your iPhone’s data connection. By the way it’s possible to connect to two different iPhomes at the same time, one for calls and another for data and music.

Unfortunately the apps are rubbish. The only thing worth connecting to the Internet for is downloading (to COMAND) destinations found on your phone, but if you do take care as it can mess up the destination in translation and unless you check you might only realise when you reach the wrong destination.

SMS messages will appear, but only those received whilst your iPhone is connected to COMAND.

Thanks, ive got one of those cables came with the car, has a USB connector on the end, ive tried to plug my phone into that standard lightning to usb cable and still it does not want to connect to my iphone direct ?

Do you have any other connections in your Centre arm rest storage area?

If I plug into the USB port then it will charge but not play music except through Bluetooth. If I plug into Media Interface port - using a similar cable but with a different connector at the end - then it will charge the phone and play music without Bluetooth.

In addition to the controls and album artwork, the sound quality through the Media Interface is better than Bluetooth.

yes so i have one of these cables that plugs into the medial interface socket, fitted in the centre arm rest storage. One end is obviously the media interface connection, the other is a USB. So i plug my iPhone into that socket using a normal lightning/USB lead, still nothing happens the command cannot read the phone, it does charge though LOL

You need to use the MB lead - NOT the usual usb/lightening cable

You need to use the MB lead - NOT the usual usb/lightening cable

this is getting confusing ! do you mean MB have a special USB/lightning lead that fits onto the media interface lead ? or are you mistakenly thinking i am trying to connect my phone directly to the car with a USB/lightning lead ? - which i am not as i have the Mercedes interface cable plugged into the interface socket, i am then plugging a USB/lightning lead into this cable to connect the phone, which is a normal apple cable, i went to my local MB dealer today from work, somebody spared me 5 minutes and told me sometimes there were issues with non apple USB leads, however i have just tried a genuine apple lead with no joy. so perhaps the media interface socket is shagged ?

What happens if you use the MB lead to connect your phone to the media socket? Ie don’t connect your apple lead to the MB lead.

I think you need a lead like this

Media Interface cable set for Mercedes R172 SLK Model Year 2013 onward

Yes i have one of those leads ! the one with the USB end on it. when i plug a USB/lightning lead into that lead to connect my phone nothing happens, the command unit does not register the existence of my phone, ive got to use the apple lead to connect it to the MB medial interface lead unless MB makes one with a media interface lead with a lightning plug on the end, in which case it would plug directly into my iphone

I can only suggest contacting Comand Online from the above link.

They are very helpful!

You need the Mercedes branded cable which has a Mercedes Media Interface connector at one end, and Apple Lightning connector at the other. There’s more than one though so check with your Mercedes parts counter or Command Online to make sure your buy the right one.

That’s the one you need, dont try buying a cheapo generic one off eBay as I did for my W166 as they just don’t work!!!!

So I have sourced a genuine Mercedes cable, all now works well with regards music and the media interface, however still cannot use the internet ? when i try i get a message saying 'this device does not support data communication '? so is there a setting on the phone that needs changing ?????
thanks Neil
