I need to change both rear engine mounts on my W168 (A160).

Is it just a matter of supporting the engine and then removing the relevant bolts? Are the mounts easily extracted from the subframe after undoing all the bolts?

Thanks

Thanks Forrera, I ended up changing the front mounts as well..

The car does seem a lot smoother and quieter now though.

that's what I was gonna say, the front one usually break not the rear

Have you seen some W168s with broken front engine mounts, then?

Where do they break, does the rubber part tear from the metal housing?

When I had a free health check done at MB Northampton last November, they noted "front engine mounts worn". Should I be worried? I understand it's a 4-hr job, so probably not ideal to book it at the same time as MOT, which is due this month? When then - before or after? Can that be a reason for failing MOT?

Four hours to change the front mounts? Sounds a tad excessive (and painful at MB labour rates).

Looking at the design of the engine mounts, it looks like the front mounts primarily control left-right movement and the rear mounts control front-rear movement.

If I am right about this, then if the rear mounts are past their best and allowing too much front to rear movement then this in turn will overload (?) and possibly damage the front mounts.

Perhaps it is best to change all four mounts at the same time?

every time you start driving from standstill and feel a slight thud, it's the front engine mounts, I've seen it many times

broken or worn engine mounts are advisory items, not mot fail. it might take 4 hours labour, that's including 2 tea breaks.

When comparing my new rear engine mounts with the old ones, the part where the main fixing bolt passes through the rubber was considerably higher on the new mounts.

I had to raise the engine a bit more to line up with the new mounts.

Yes, the 4hr quoted was for all four mounts, I'm going to take her to have it done later this month.

... after windows' comfort closure system, new armrest and MOT ;)
