I have owned a W169 2009 180 petrol A-Class from new and am very fond of the car and want to keep it.
It is however a little slow......
Does anyone know of any engine improvements or larger engines which can be installed or maybe recommend someone who specialises in W169s?

How much money do you want to spend on it?

Almost anything is possible if you're willing to throw time and money at a problem, but I assume you're not thinking of dropping an AMG V8 in to it.

How about a turbo? It would need some supporting mods and a remap, but I'll bet that could pep the performance up.

I'm sure, but where and has anyone done it before?
It would be nice not the be a pioneer.

Rebellion remap / box was looked at by a chap at work

Cannot remember what he thought of it (or if he had it done) as it was a while ago.....

Didn't think there was a 180 petrol W169?

If the car has a CVT automatic transmission I would council against boosting the power as its one of the models weak spots?

On the upside the diesel engine would respond just as well to a turbo, and possibly requires less prep... but destroying a gearbox certainly ads to the cost.

Maybe a supercharger is a more practical addition; the power delivery is more linear and there's no messing about with custom exhausts.

Yes there was a petrol A180 but, in Mercedes style, the engine is 1700cc.
I only found out once I bought the car!
Thanks for the replies but they are mainly speculative. The point about my CVT gearbox is well made though. I'm trying to find out if somebody has actually had any performance work carried out or knows of a specialist.

You've already noted it but I would also add my thoughts about being wary about upping power/torque with the CVT,.

I'd be surprised if many people have tuned or transplanted other engines into a W169; there was an A210 version of the previous A class, W168, which I suppose might fit.

All speculative though!

I'd be interested to hear about this. I'm running a manual a160 W169, 2011 model, would love to squeeze more power out of the engine or see what can be done about that sluggish engine!

When I bought my A200 C169, I debated whether to go for an A200 Turbo (never considered diesel models), but decided not to, for two main reasons: there are many complaints from (W245) B200 Turbo Canadian owners, but almost none from B200 ones (both CVT, and the same engines as A200/A200t), and couldn't find a suitable A200 Turbo CVT coupé ...

That's why, when I thought about it, a supercharger might be a better option. - Less plumbing to play with and a more linear (i.e. predictable) power curve.

If you just want an out-of-the-box solution; did Brabus (or similar) make anything for the W169?
