W201 190e 1987 Key Ignition Problem

Daughter is having problems starting her car Began last night when she put key into ignition but it would not turn at all. Tried it myself this afternoon and same thing happened although pulling key out one notch and moving it to and fro slightly did get it to turn and start.

However this is not the long term solution so any thoughts on what is actually happening please?

I was always told off by the guys that did any work on my car not to have all the keyrings other keys etc, hanging from the ignition key as the constant swinging to and fro would eventually wear out the cylinder, and there was a chance i might not be able to remove it. Does your daughter have lots of keys?
