W201 1989 2.6
Gentlemen,

Can anyone advise me of the correct ride height of a 1989 W201 190E 2.6 Sportline?

Mine is 170mm from road to the flat part under the sill. The car appears low. But without this starting point, I have no idea what may be wrong.

Can you help??

Hi Guys.

Thank you for your comments.

So far MB Australia has told me to get lost and speak with the local dealer. The local dealer said they have no idea, and I should google it. I said perhaps they need to use their connections within the Daimler Benz network. They said they can only speak with MB Australia and so far, there has been no response. I spoke with a “specialist” suspension company…. They said ring the equivalent of the DMV.

The DMV (RMS here in Shitsville) could not tell me, but the nice guy did tell me for a normal 190E height is 1,375mm and ground clearance is 134mm. Easy to do the height, but the ground clearance is a little harder. As I mentioned I measured from the ground to the first flat part of the sill and it is 170mm…higher, so the measurement may be from another point.

I measured my 1989 W201 2.6 Sportline and it is 1,330mm in height. Meaning 45mm lower than standard.

I do not want to start replacing shocks/springs/pads if using the Sportline it will not change the height.

Has anyone any suggestions???

When the 2.6 190 first came out it was subject to revised spring and dampers to improve handling and deal with the extra engine weight[resulted in a slightly lower ride height as standard ]--- so not comparable to the four-cylinder models. I can safely say that by this time very few 190s will be riding on their original springs and dampers so it's difficult to say how accurate your car ride height and clearance is now. Ride height is normally determined by spring height and spring pad thickness. Spring height is normally determined by car equipment and Mercedes have tables to calculate the correct replacement springs- fine height adjustment is achieved through different spring pad thicknesses. Lots of info on here about that. You have to make up your mind what you are trying to achieve-- factory ride height or a ride height you want? I imagine ground clearance is measured from the lowest part of the car which might be the engine sump to ground distance?

Hi Guys

Thanks for the input.

I found the answer in the Mercedes Archives - that were fascinating. (201 series compact-class saloons, 1988 - 1993 | marsClassic)

Sportline 21mm lower. So that is a great starting point. Thank you. So mine has sagged about 24mm about an inch in the old fashioned measure.

There was a video of the electric W201…..I still think we should electrify our W201….if done they will be faster than the Cosworth with less trouble.

I have a slightly more pressing matter, the lawyer wants a valuation on the family home. But get this…normal valuation for the bank about AUD500, valuation for the family court AUD1,100. Aside from my daughters, I should never have married the narcissistic bitch. Happy wife Happy life – Bull: stay true to yourself and avoid the longer term pain.

Thanks again.
