W201 fuel gauge

Just bought a 1991 190e 2.0 petrol in very good condition but with one annoying issue. When the tank reaches just below half, the low fuel warning light comes on. I've had the fuel level sender out and it looks OK, bit am a little reluctant to run the tank dry as I don't know what crud may get sucked up. Is the low fuel light part of the sender - Haynes as usual is a little vague!? And any other ideas?
