hi folks, would like to know which engine oil is best suited for my w202 1.8 1995 with 140.000 miles on it.needs changing soon.
was thinking 10/40 fully synth ?
There's an MB specification. If memory serves it's 229.1 for mine and it's probably the same for yours as well. Anything that meets that will be fine and probably a good deal cheaper than fully synthetic.
Fully synthetic is too thin for an old engine. Use semi synthetic 10w40. Don't worry too much about the oil unless a car has a turbo or a dpf filter. I know it makes you feel better but it doesn't matter

While I agree that the cheaper semi-synthetic oil will be good enough for his car, I am not sure I understand the comment regarding full-synthetic oil being thin?
The 'thinness' of the oil has to do with the viscosity value, not chemical composition.
There's nothing wrong with full-synth 5W-40 for his car, and you can even get full-synth with 10W-40 grade if this is the grade you want (Mobil-1 does them).
As long as he chooses the correct viscosity grade, he'll be fine with either semi or full synth.
The cheapest 229.1 spec 10w/40 I've found is Petronas Syntium 1000 from ECP which is £12.59 for 4 litres before the forum discount. It worked out better for me as I needed 7 litres for my w124, so buying in 4 litre packs made more sense than the seemingly standard 5l packs for other brands. Even the per litre price is better than ECPs own Triple QX brand.
