I have a 2000 w202 C240. I recently had it serviced by a independent mobile mechanic.
When I went to check the ATF level I found there was no dip stick so I bought one off Ebay from Poland.
I dipped it this morning after it had been sat all night and the level was just over the maximum "hot" mark when cold.

Now someone said it was just as bad to over fill it as it was to under fill it?.

What I want to know is: (1) what damage will or can it cause if left unchecked or is it safe?

(2) What sign, if any, will it give should it be a problem?

I have been driving it like this for 2 months with no problems and all gear changes are smooth but at idle it does vibrate slightly but nit every time.

The level should be checked with the gearbox at normal running temperature (about 80C), on a level surface, engine running and the gearbox in P.

Yes I know. However it is showing over the max level when cold and where I would expect it to be when hot...if you see what I mean ?

I suspect that if I dip it after a good run it would be well up the wire of the dip stick way above the marker.

I would like to know if it can cause a problem as it is and if so what and what symptoms it may show .....would the vibration at idle be caused by this.

Hi Keith,

It all depends if your dipstick is accurate, it should have a min/max cold and a min/max hot reading.

If it is overfilled by some margin the pressure will rise in the gearbox and will cause leaks first. Normally from the pilot bush area :thumb:

you could have the wrong dipstick as there is two differnt types for mercedes gearboxes

Just remembered, I had it in neutral and not park....does that make a difference and if so what ?

Now I'm looking like a dipstick 8-)

Looking at the picture, the cold level should be within the blue and the hot level within the red :thumb:

Well, when stone cold my level is just over the red !!!!!!!

Half a litre?.....thats not a lot then as I thought it was going to be more than that. So, half a litre shouldn't hurt then ?

The ATF is onto the actual wire.

Drain a bit out, need a 5mm Allen Key socket and ratchet. Would do more damage on the motorway at higher speeds than plodding around town :thumb:

Thanks for that. I do more around Cardiff City than M/Way so will get onto that tomorrow or Friday.

Would the overfill cause the slight vibration at idle ?

No, would not of thought so. More like a worn belt tensioner or maybe a slight misfire. Hard to say really without seeing the car :thumb:

Why don't you take the car back to the mechanic and get them to check. Would save you the uncertainty about if you are doing it right/have the right dipstick ..

I have put my diagnostics laptop on it and it kept saying the 02 sensors but I KNOW that is not right as I put brand new ones on the car 3 weeks ago from ECP and no other fault is coming uop and no light on the dash but it drives like it should.
