Hi all :))
Just bought another merc..

W202 C180 1996, auto.. a/c the lot..

anyway cut the long story short..

Whenever I have a cold start.. when the engine temp is cold, I start the engine up and I hear a clciking sound from the engine..
The clicking sound is there all the time, even when I accelerate it just gets louder and faster.. limited to 4000 obviously because its a w202 i guess..
anyway,
however when the engine starts to warm up, i.e 60c or 80c warm temp
the engine purrs excellently...
no sound at all
even on full acceleration
absolutely no clicking
its just until engine gets slightly warm the clicking is there

Any Ideas guys?

Thanks in advance..

BTW, the service was done - according to service book - Sept 09..
so i guess the oil inside is ok,
but could it be the wrong oil causing the clicking?
wrong grade?

Thanks again.

could be a dry lifter!

dirty lifter? wheres that?

dirty lifter? wheres that?
hydrolic lifters there between the valve's and cam shaft! they lift up with oil pressure to take up the tiny gap!

has the car sat around for any time?

ermm no not that im aware of.. i just bought the car yesterday..
How can i check them?
and are there any other possibilities?

the onely way you can check them is to stip the cams out!
not a good idea if its not needed!
i would do a good oil change

ok then, thanks for the possibillity =))
any other ideas?

bump..

Noisy tappets ....

While the car is warming up , the oil is very viscous ,as it warms the oil makes its way in and the tappets receive the oil so the tapping stops.

As you rev it , the tappets move quicker , so the noise gets quicker ....

If you take it to a good garage , they will be able to tell which one it is by listening to the engine with a tool , i had a sticky tappet on my old 230CE , cost £60 to replace it.

ooooooooh okayyy :) I thought that was the case but thought I'll ask here for more ideas..
thanks for explaining that possibility as well..
I really appriciate all help given here..
Thanks Howard.. =)

Does it sound like a noisy sewing machine when you rev it ?

yes, just like that.

yes, just like that.

Cheers mate:)
Is there anyway i can get them loose, / clean them myself... ? any fluids etc...? without having to go to the mechanic?

lifters are tappets
