This is going to sound silly. My Haynes manual tells me simply to undo the oil filter cap (I have the large fluted tool) and remove the old element, put in the new element and replace the cap using a new cap "o" ring. Fine then. However, I see from this forum that other models oild filter change instructions refer to two additional "o" rings fitted inside the oil filter housing (on a spindle). My Haynes manual doesn't show or refer to these and the new Mann brand oil filter I purchased from Euro Car Parts only incorporates the oil filter cap "o" ring. Am I correct in thinking that on my 1997 model C200 there are no internally fitted o rings ? Sorry for a silly question but although I've changed oil etc on many cars in the past, this will be the first time I've done it on this car. Thanks.

Don't worry its the later cars that have these additional O-rings not your model 1996? Instead of the central plastic spine attached to the cap when you take off the cap you will find a central hollow metal tube BUT its part of the metal filter housing not the filter cap. The filter clips into to the cap and the other end with the felt seal threads over the hollow metal tube as the element slips into the housing. There is ONLY one large O ring which fits into an indent groove on the cap. When you remove the old filter take a good look at how it all fits together it pretty obvious. Its well worth buying the large oil filter socket for this job as it makes the job so much easier-Halfords stock them.
edit:- reread your post you've got one already.:o

Thanks Grober. That's very helpful and reassuring. I've already got the large oil filter cap tool from Halfords by the way but thanks again anyway.
