Hi, just a quick question...
What mpg would w202 c230k auto owners consider reasonable for:-

1 Motorway - upwards of 75mph steady state
2 Motorway - say 65 ish (for maximum economy)
3 General Pootling about (30ish with lights, stops etc)
4 Central London (the pits)

I only ask because whilst zipping through London over the weekend, I only managed 5 miles per litre in stop start traffic  . I've never gone this low before. Also, the quoted extra urban figs for my car are about 38mpg (8.35 miles per litre). I've never managed more than 7.35 miles per litre (33.4mpg).
Tyres and new and correctly pressurised. In all other respects car is okay.

I suppose it could be me imagining things as the traffic is a bitch, but my dailt commute East London - Windsor (66 miles) using embankment and M4 used to take 10 litres and its now 11.8 ish.

Am I just being paranoid?

Rgds

5 miles per litre thats erm....... 22.5 miles per gallon - thats good i'd say .

From my C200 Auto, I get almost constantly 21/22 miles per gallon, per tank. Most of my journeys are under 4 miles, so cold engine stop start.
On the motorway etc over 30 is possible

My c200 Averages about 27mpg, but I have managed 19mpg once and 34mpg once!!

..thank you R2D2...reason I was asking is that I was suspecting that my car was eating too much petrol (like up to 20% too much  ) and has been looked at today. It passed emissions and apart from a slightly noisy centre box - which I was told didn't need attention yet - it seems okay.
They're just doing a bit of star diagnostics to check that the engine 'parameters' are within specification and that's it. I was afraid maybe the cat was going and sucking bits into the engine.
So paranoia aside the cost was £70ish (and not a new engine! or cat or exhaust! :bannana: ).
Originally, when the noisiness first started (30,000 miles ago) the MB dealer tried to sting me for £1,000 to fit everything new and told the above horror story (about the engine). I just left it and now at 63,000 miles its still apparently okay. I confess to having left the car at George Fraser and he has taken a look, rang me to explain / discuss and give me his opinion. It all seems reasonable.
So, only time will tell, but I do feel a bit smug about saving £1,000 :bannana:
I feel so much better.
I guess that it must be the London Traffic after all.
I did try the car on a longer run on sunday and the fuel calcs I did seemed okay - town 5mpl and motorway 7.2mpl .
Regards
Les

Transmissionist!

If it helps, the best I get regularaly is 350 miles to a tank, so 31.8mpg.

The worst I have done is about 270 miles out of a tank.

cars also need regular long high speed runs to clear their lungs out so they perform better

20+ MPG for a ~200bhp, petrol, automatic saloon car doesn't seem too bad for me (in London traffic!) :)

As has been said (and you also are aware) it is a lot better on a run, but even some diesels don't manage 30 mpg in town, so I wouldn't be too worried.

To be honest, fuel consumption has never really bothered me. If I was that concerned, I would be driving a micro-hatch or a smart car etc! :)

After all, the largest expense for most people with their cars is depreciation. Fuel is expensive in this country, but in real terms, an average driver will only save a few hundred pounds a year by driving a more fuel efficient car, but could loose thousands by buying a car that holds its value badly!

Just my honest opinion! :p

Cheers,

Will

..thanks to everyone who replied with re-assuring useful information. The star diagnostics were all fine apart from one registered fault with BAS . However, since none of my warning lights has ever come on, and after discussion with George, its nothing to worry about. He did agree that at speed, the noise from the centre box was more pronounced, but that he didn't recommend doing anything about it yet.

At the risk of being told that I need to get out more, I am going to monitor the fuel more closely as I could still swear that it eats more than it did 6 months ago on the same journey.

Cheers

Try 1 month on Optimax and 1 month on normal unleaded and let us know how you get on.

...strangely enough, the thought had crossed my mind, based on the stuff they claim to put in it - ie it 'cleans' your engine. I've never used it before.
Time to churn out a few 'excel' fuel sheets!

I reckon i get better fuel consumption out of higher RON fuels but others arent sure so a scientific experiment would be useful. Optimax makes the engine run smoother on mine. My kids can tell by listening if the car has Optimax in the car........I know that is so so sad!!! I go and fill up the car they have to tell me what its running on.
