My beloved '97 c230k has suddenly developed an anoying misfire, i fitted a new set of spark plugs but this did not solve the problem, has this happened to any other owners? can any one help please.

Hey bud, mine started to run very 'lumpy' and misfire/lag on acceleration - get the fault codes read on a STAR system before replacing anything. Mine was a dodgy MAF, quite common fault on these.

What is a MAF and where can i find it, also what part does it play in the engine management.

A MAF is an Air Mass Flow Meter. Crazy acronym, eh? It will be found somewhere between the air filter and the engine. Its job is to tell the ECU how much air is getting into the engine so the ECU can adjust the amount of fuel.

MAFs have a tendency to fail on Mercs of this vintage. And they're expensive when they do.

Hi,
In my considered opinion these symptons (if you have described accurately) don,t indicate a MAF, before you spend anymore money, try replacing the ignition leads, there are only two, and the two plug caps under the coils, cheaper "possible" solution than the MAF.
If this does,nt solve the issue you could try removing the MAF and cleaning it with carb cleaner but be careful as the element is very fragile, and easily damaged.
