I've just picked up a 1994 c280 auto. It's drives fine other than the kickdown doesn't seem to work and having the selector button on S or E seems to make no difference and the car will upshift at fairly low revs even If the switch is in 'S', rather than holding the gear till higher up the revs before shifting.

The manual selection of '3' or '2' works fine.

Any ideas?

Dead switch? I know W124's seem to suffer from this, I need to look at my E220's because I think it's gone.

Just noticed my subject title says 'lockdown' rather than 'kickdown'. Iphone predictive text grrrr

Yes lockdown switch is my first thought but I'm a little confused by fact it doesn't hold gears for longer when selector is In the 's' position. I didn't think the two were linked but maybe they are

Hmmm read a few threads on other forums about early upshift To 4th, no kick Down etc same symptoms as mine and has ended up being major gearbox issues! Great. The cars only done 79k too. Grrrr

That's for later electronic boxes. Mine is a 94 so has the early type 4 speed.

So on way to work this morn this is what it does:

From stone cold for a few mins it would rev up to higher revs when gunning it but once warm it up shifts before 3k all the time regardless of if switch is in S or E position. All gear changes are super smooth as they should be. No kickdowb at all.

Could just be as simple as the slider not engaging the actual switch. Its a very simple mechanism. The slider thingy just trips a switch underneath it. Might just not be in the slot any more. Do you get kickdown if you push the pedal past the notch? Even if its stuck in E it should kickdown at that point but not otherwise.

Anyone got instructions for adjusting the gearbox Bowden cable at all on a early c280?
