w202 Cruise Control Retro Fit?

Now I am happy knowing I am keeping my car long term, the only thing missing for me is cruise control (being a manual it was an option not standard). When looking at Audi TT's I had the mod already scoped (simple plug in stalk jobbie) at a cost of ~£150 so don't see why I shouldn't pay similar to do the same job on the C now it is staying.

I know MBenz (Steve) effectivly retro fitted this to his pre-facelift C250 manual, but it's one of the few undocumented mods on his website.

I have seen a facelift manual C230K with Cruise so know it is possible.

I also know for some models, MB do a complete cruise retro fit kit.

If this job is just the case of the stalk, possibly a new steering column housing to accomodate the stalk, the plugging in of a loom and perhaps a switching of it on via a Star diagnostics, I think I would like to go for it, assuming the cost is no more than a few hundred pounds top wack.

Can anyone help with the mostly missing parts to this?

What parts do I need?

I have discussed this with Shude, so thanks for your help so far, but with the new techie members we have on the forum recently, I am hoping someone may have the answer.

I really would like to have cruise and the speed limiter function (if that works on a manual) as I think it will help my motorway motoring and my speed fluctuation problems!

thanks in advance

Graham

Good for you . . . . sounds like a sensible mod :) This is the first car I've had with Cruise, and I would never buy another one without it now - especially if lots of motorway driving is needed.

I don't expect the parts are much more than you have outlined . . . . just the expertise required to fit it to OEM standard that will be a little more challenging to source !!

Yeah, I am hoping, not to exlude anyone else but one of our more technical members, perhaps the likes of Dieselman, teky or Miro can help?

In my days of 4x4 driving there were DIY kits about that required the fitment of sensors on the drive shafts for speed measurment and something like a pump fitted to the throttle housing to adjust the throttle, and obviously a brain for the system and a stalk on the steering coloum,Things may have changed a bit by now but I rekon they havent changed that much. The sensors on the drive shaft may have been replaced by connecting direct to the speed pulse wire?

I am after an orignal MB retro fit only, thanks.

The retrofit MBenzNL did to his R129 SL required only the stalk. We really need to ask MBenzNL about this I think :)

You are right Shude, I was just seeing if it was possible to source the answer without bothering him. I'll fire an email off and hope I'm less that 300 in the list of unreads!!

Well, I got a response from the email I sent to Steve. Well, it was from Steve's account, but not fdrom Steve - perhaps he has got an assistant!!

The response was, MB should do a kit to retro fit cruise.

So, I called Hughes, Aylesbury.

The guy found the list of retro fit kit parts after I explained to him some features were available as retro fit kits as oppossed to individual parts.

Parts Man: "Where did you get this info?"

Me: "Research on the internet"

Parts Man: "Oh, they might not be Mercedes Parts"

Me: "They are"

He advised that as far as the computer was concerned nothing was available for a RHD car. He did say he could see a retro kit for a LHD car up to a '98 year. However he said that had a note to say it did not include "controllers" and cost £508+vat.

He explained he could not recommend that part as in all honesty he did not know enough about it and that as a dealership they did not have much experieince of retro fitting parts.

He then went on to say that retro fitting options and features at dealerships is dying out.

Parts Man: "It's more of a specialist/enthusiasts area. If you are looking on the internet, you might find out more"

Parts Man: "We can't even retro fit Sat Nav to the latest models as a dealership, but I know it can be done"

Me: "Oh, you mean Command units?. Yes, I know people who make a living specialising in retro fitting them to just about anything"

I made a polite end to the call, making the guy sound like he had been helpfull.

Oh well, £500 is about double my justifiable limit and I call that a dead end anyway. Will have to loose that idea, unless anyone ever want's to disect their Cruise, so I can slowly gather parts from a breakers.

I'm at Steve's place now, he's looking it up on his computer.

He says that from what he can see in the electronical layout, you only need the handle - which needs to be plugged into the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch), and then version-coded (at the dealer). He recently did this in his 2004 VITO as well..

This seems to be the part# for the handle you need: A2085450424

Let us know how it goes.

I can't thank you enough :D

That's excellent, cheers!

£48 + vat - it's a goer!

The independant who is servicing my car today says he has done this before. He has the equipment to code it too!!

Also adds that he has previously cut the shrouds to accomodate the extra stalk before, so no need for a new one.

I'll report back when the job is complete - next week hopefully!!

I knew it would just be the stalk, didn't I say it would be? :)

You, you did.

The guy who can code it, thinks maybe there is one other small part required for manuals, but will check his system and give it a go anyway.

I assured him my contact (Mbenz) was as reliable as they come.

EDIT: My guy has confirmed stalk only required. Needs the car for about 1.5 hours to complete work - is going to give me a shout next week when he has a gap :bannana:

Plug, program and play.

I was just discussing with Fuzzer. I am not sure if anyone has cruise on a manual car that can confirm (or anyone that can be bothered to read the manual).

I am not sure I will get the speed limiter function. It strikes me that it could be dangerous as there is no kickdown switch below the gas pedal to overide it.

EDIT: - unless it deactivates if clutch is pressed.

Either way, cruise is on it's way :D

How does the speed limiter normally work? I assume not all cruise controls have this... at least, if my S320 has it, ive no idea how to activate it!!! :(
