W202 Failed MOT

Hi,

1998 C180 failed test today as foglamp telltale light not working. At the risk of looking a numptie (it's been a long day), where is it?! Don't have a handbook and the Haynes is no use. Took instrument cluster out, no faulty bulbs there. I should have asked the MOT tester but it needs a load of brake pipes replacing which I can do myself so just brought the car home.

Dot in the middle of the switch knob (not the cluster).

Is the telltale actually and MOT requirement? Mines never checked at MOT time (yesterday - passed :bannana as I'm the one sat in the car operating the lights.

Its in the centre of the light switch. Should come on when you pull it out to the second position first position is front fog lights second is rear warning light should come on red.

Thanks for the quick replies chaps. Still I had a lot of fun taking the instrument cluster out. Will tackle it tomorrow. Tester did say the telltale is a definite requirement, new one on me too.

Just checked and yes tell tale is a part of the test (indicator telltale as well, or audible tick).

Will remember to let the tester know it's working next time (actually next week with the wife's car - two MOTs due within the same week).

I had a 2003 Nissan X Trail which never had a tell tale light for the front fogs, only for the rears. I had it from new & kept it for 5 years and it never failed an MOT because of it not having one.

Front fogs don't use a tell tale.

Presumably why everybody drives with them on...

my 309 gti, left indicator tell tale never worked and it sailed through all its MOT's. There was the tick though

yep but it's not a legal requirement, whereas it is for the rears.

for the OP

just pull the light switch off (may require a good firm tug) and you'll find a light bulb in the middle - simple to change
