W202 Petrol smell when brimmed.

I've noticed my '98 W202 C240 has a ferocious petrol smell, both inside and outside, when the tank is just filled and for maybe 20-30 miles thereafter. It's also very hard to fill completely with the last 1/4 tank taking an age with the most delicate of touch on the nozzle trigger.

Is there a breather somewhere that may be blocked?

One of the pipes that runs from the tank is probably split. Remove the OSR wheel an take a look.

Yep....I had the same problem. Olly put it up on the ramps at one of his GTGs and identified it.

It really doesn't take much to make the car smell of petrol inside and out. My pipe was just very slightly damp and not even dripping.

I replaced the flexible pipes and the problem was fixed.

Doesn't explain the difficulty filling the last 1/4 tank though.
