Car
Mercedes-less at the moment
I posted a couple of weeks ago that my car was making a whining noise when at 60. It was the diff and my local garage has at c180 for breaking. After they fitted it the ABS (sensor) on the diff was destroyed as it was seized up.

When this was not there the car was drivable but the ABS light was on and the car would not shift gears (stayed in 1st)

Bought a new one from the dealers and though it would be the end of my problems. Now the car starts on 2nd or maybe 3rd and doesn't change up or down. Initially we thought that the car was just gutless and got a MAF from ECP on "loan".

My garage can't connect his Snap-ON computer to the ECU so I guess I need a STAR machine in Wiltshire. Without connecting though anyone has any ideas what could it be though. This morning it sound like it started on 1st and shifted to 2nd I don't think it has moved. It drives almost like in limp mode.

To make matters worse my mates have been lending their cars to get to work and coincidentally they all have been BMW. I am almost converted :ban:

Nik , can you get to Ollys ?

I'm sure Olly would work out pretty quick what was wrong , and would be able to fix it for you ....

A long drive , but worth it i feel. Free tea and good banter when you are there.

He solved my CLK320 gearbox issue , which had stumped everyone else .

Very inportant, a wrong ratio can cause this problem as it happened to a friend of mine who had a late w210 e class.

But not sure if this can effect your C180 in the same way.

Why dont you have a look at the ratios of the two diffs and compare.
The number is stamped near the back of the diff on the bottom corner.

I am seriously thinking on it. It is going to be a pain getting there doing a max of 50 all the way.

My last 180 came from Wiltshire P953 GUD. Anybody you know?

Bummer! I will check that

Do it early morning when there is nothing on the roads , get to Ollys for half seven or something ...

Anyone can confirm this? The old diff is with the garage and the guy is not answering the phone!

OK I checked the numbers:

On the one currently in my car: 1013288 3.91
On the previous one: 1023259 3.64

I take it these are different and short of finding another diff with the same matching number is there any other solutions? Can this be programmed in STAR?

Part number on the casing of the diff though were a match: R 201 351 16 08 CV

Looks like you need a diff with a ratio of 3.64, but get someone to approve this because the same thing happened to a friend of mone who had a late w210.

Olly do you know if a different diff can be programmed on STAR? I will be prepared to make the journey to yours even if it takes hours at 45 mph.

Or is that a case of finding a different diff?

Nik

See the russian site here - the 3.91 final drive was only ever used on manual c180s and the 3.64 looks like the standard auto fit.

3.91 is a big jump - 10% more revs for the same speed.

Dieselman had this problem when he tried to fit a lower ratio-diff to his w210 - fault code was "inplausible diff ratio". Not sure this can be coded as he ended up swaping the diff back for his old one.

The donnor car was an auto though, same reg (P). Only difference the donor is a classic and mine an elegance. I am fed up my car at the moment though, to the point that I am considering a Lexus :-)
