Hello all, just signed up to the forum. :)

I bought myself a barn-find 1995 W202 C280 Sport Auto earlier this year for peanuts and am in the process of getting it all sorted. I've replaced the headlights for continental versions (the car is RHD but I'm living in France). It's also had brand new tyres, new MAF, full service, and lastly a deep clean inside about out.

Two big things left to do. The rear differential wants replacing as it's getting noisy now (the oil was changed, didn't help the noise but might keep it going for the moment). I've seen numerous W202 rear diffs for sale both here and on EBay UK which look suitable, but is there any way to make sure I get the correct one?

Also if anyone knows how to help me choose the right alternator V-belt from the options on Eurocarparts I'd be grateful. Thanks in advance.

On the back of the diff you'll find the ratio stamped on to one of the ears on the main casing (next to where the back plate bolts on).

That's the important bit, you may find the diff is the same a later W124 diff with abs, so it should be easy enough to find one, are you sure it's not a wheel bearing rather than the diff?

Get a V-Belt from MB, they're not all that expansive and they fit better than the copy ones.

Thanks for the reply. Is the diff different (or fitted differently) on a model with ABS compared to one without? I've seen a few diffs from early W202's but as my car has ABS I don't want to buy an incompatible one.

The early ones have an abs sensor in the diff, the late ones don't.

So you do need to get the right size and design of diff with the right ratio, you can't just fit any old 202 diff in there.

Below is my for sale thread for a complete splitting of a w202 v6 sport...... could help you.

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/clas...has only one rear sensor fittted in the diff.

Thanks, I'm fairly sure I've figured out that I need a 3.07 ratio diff?

Hi,
The change over year for the three/four sensor ABS systems was circa 1997, at least in the W202.

Thanks, so any diff of the correct 3.07 ratio, pre-1997, should fit correctly?
