Ive noticed on start up and when sitting idle that there is a screeching noise coming from the engine area! Im assuming its the fan belt but is there anything i can do to stop it?? Does it mean that anything is on its way out???

Cheers

Can anyone at least verify that its likely to be the fanbelt??

It could be a fan belt! But I think they have auto-tensioners on them???? Maybe one of the guys on here who run Indis could clarify... Could be a seized water pump!

It’s possibly the fan belt if it is either worn, wet or has oil on it.
I had my belt changed 2 years ago, that’s about 11,000 miles approximately because of wear and slight cracking, it was possibly the original belt.

Very occasionally on a cold start I get a quick squeal from the belt, I put this down to excessive condensation in the belt area, damp day kind of thing.

Others may say it could be pulley wear but I don’t know enough about that to comment.

its most likely to be a worn bearing

Obtain a very long screwdriver and put it on the water pump while the engine is running. Put your ear on the handle end, youll soon know if the pumps making the noise.

Thanks for that!! Mot is due in 2 months so want to get everything sorted before then!!

Had a flat battery recently?

I did and then a similar screeching appeared. I thought it was the fanbelt too but then thanks to board members on this thread - http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=20265

I realised it was simply the alternator being put under load! Went a two hour drive to give the battery some charge and never heard it again. :bannana:

Put some talcum powder on the belt, if it stops screeching then the belt is goosed. If the screeching is still there then further investigation as above will be required.

Thanks, not had a flat battery. will try the talc powder trick!!

Could it be one of the idler wheels? The bearings start to squeak sometimes.

Maybe try carefully stalling the suspect item to eliminate it.

Cheap/simple to replace if so.

The screeching is only there when the car isnt moving, as soon as the car moves off the noise disappears! Does this help??
