Hi, i was given some old parts for a W202 a while ago which included the white speedo cluster from a 97, my car is a 95 so would these fit? i have read on here somewhere that they wont but the man who gave them to me was pretty sure they would be able to fit, he works with mercedes a lot so i took his word for it.

They pretty much look the same, same layout, same lights, only different is what looks to be like the hazard light is in the middle.

The hazard light in the middle is the "telltale" for traction control.

The rest should be OK. I say give it a go. Wiser men will be along soon to assist.

There are three basic types of instrument cluster for the 202.

Pre-pre-facelift 1993-95, pre-facelift 95-97 and facelift 97+.

If it has white dials then it is likely a facelift-only cluster. The speedo itself, RPM and a few other items may work but a lot of functions are controlled by CANBUS on the facelift models.

The dials themselves can be removed and swapped to update the appearance of the pre-97 cluster though :)

Nit-picking, but there are 4, the very late W202s with the tiptronic display also :D

Have done the transformation, the only thing that can be moved over are the pointers and the dial faces. The clear plastic piece for lighting doesn't fit; new cluster use small bulbs, older cluster 2 big bulbs in the centre. The scale will not light up evenly at night either. Masking tape from behind helps.

The issue of ambient light sensor is in the wrong place as well. Since it's covered by the LIM (limiter indicator) portion of the face. The clock, trip meter, outside temp indicator will not be as bright.

I have done this (my car's a 96MY) and in the end I put the original one back on and sold the white cluster. Mine interior is of beige colour so it sort of looks out of place.

Thanks for the advice everyone. So just to confirm that if i replace the whole unit for the white dials it should still work (maybe) . . . . . . I think swapping the dial faces and pointers will be plan B judging from ur lighting problems.

Cluster from 98 models (white faces), may probably NOT work with 96MY cars since the wiring and electronics are different. Forget about the 93-95MY, their clusters are different to later models, even by appearances.

I didn't try plugging in the unit when I had a chance. Too afriad to muck things up with the car. So I did have a go at taking apart the cluster itself.
