W202 Whine Noise

Mercedes-less at the moment
I have noticed recently a whinning noise that comes (what I presume to be transmission/gearbox). It starts at 65mph and stops at 75mph (peaking in loudness at 70 mph).

I hadn't noticed because most of my driving is done at 60 mph but maybe has been there for a while (4-5 months at the most though).

I have video-ed it and will post on youtube then link to here but can't do it work (youtube is blocked).

I can describe it as a resonance noise, like whine if you hit 69-70 peaks.

Any ideas, what could it be ?

Nik

Prop bearing?

Gearbox?

Get it up in the air and run it in drive. The noise will be apparant.

Video as promised. The light that has come one is unrelated (blown brake light, sorted now)

That sounds like a prop bearing. Loud though!

Thank you Ollie.

I have found the a donor car and the local garage says that it sounds like is coming from the front of the diff (where the shaft connects to the diff). Is that where the prop bearing is located though?

P.S. Where do you buy 85W 90 Oil (MB Dealership will not sell it to me as it is only on the pumps, Halfords do not do it and neither does ECP

Nik

75 90 oil will be fine.

No thats not the prop bearing. Thats the diff input shaft bearing.

Isn't a bit unusual for a diff to go, the car has done 149k but my dad had a w123 which did half a million and never had a problem with the diff? Or it does happen on w202?

P.S. Out of curiosity where is the prop bearing located?

I used to get a terrible whining noise in mine when I went over 70mph.
Turned out to be a wife.

Right a bit of an update:

Took the diff from the donor car (no problem there). Apart from a sensor that didn't want to come off. The same problem with mine (the sensor embbeded from corrosion onto the diff). We tried carefully but it was lodged. Finally we removed it but it was ruined in the process:

Now I have a new diff with new oil but no sensor. I have covered the plug with the metallic sheath of the old (donor car).

Now my car drives, can't comment on the noise yet as I can't do over 30 mph as gears do not change. The ABS light is on.

I thought this was a speedo sensor but that works fine so I guess it has something to do with the gearbox. Why a sensor on the diff though?

Anyway part no: A202 540 26 17

Dealer closed after 2 today cannot order check what is it (an more important how much is going to cost)? Anyone has any ideas? It looks like an ABS sensor (magnet over metallic teeth).

It's the ABS speed sensor.

And they're about £60 from MB.

Thank you Nick. Would it affect the gearbox though? It was strange that it was not changing gears.
