My C180 (W202) 1996 has suddenly started misbehaving when cold.
It starts perfectly, but then will die unless you use the accelerator to keep the revs at 1500 or so for a few minutes until it warms up a bit, then it will idle OK, although its a bit lacking in power until fully hot.

I understand you can't just clean them with soapy water, someone will explain how, some special liquid/spray?

Or a new one, at a cost of £100 - £160! I had to replace mine a few months ago. Car ran alot better for it though.

Cleaning it does not really work in the long term. Get it diagnosed first before throwing parts at it. It may save you ££ in the future.

Cleaning out the MAF

Well, I took out the MAF, took it to my workshop and removed the important bit from the plastic tube. There appeared to be about 4 short wires, about 5-6mm long in line with the flow of air, in a sort of venturi formed in the plastic moulding at the top. On close inspection I found a small bit of unidentifiable grot on the front-most wire. In addition there was a metal surface lower down and partially covered by the plastic moulding. I used a cotton bud, dry, to hook out the piece of grot. I then replaced the whole assembly, and started the car from cold. It idled perfectly. It now accelerates much much better...feels like a different car. Auto gear changes are, however sometimes not as gentle as they used to be: not as smooth, and sometimes quite abrupt. Apart from contamination from the airflow, I don't see what there is to degenerate electrically in the MAF. Thermistors/resistive devices are generally very reliable devices, the least likely to fail of all electronic devices, as long as they are not over-run by putting too much current through them. I think I shall investigate further cleaning methods.

Buy a new one. They are not that expensive. The MAF uses a hot wire method to wor out air flow.

If it is a hot wire maf as opposed to the hot film maf which I have on mine, the hot wire maf output signal can change if the surface of the hot wire becomes dirty or contaminated.

The wire is heated to a high burn-off temp every time the engine is turned off.

So, perhaps the burn-off mode is not working as it should.

Also see your air filter for condition, and for originality.

After market filters are not a good idea.

gear changing

i have c200sport w202, i had a full diagnostic check it came back some sensor faults which i changed, it still needed high revs to change gears, then done a check on gear box and found the valve box was faulty and the brake light .

fitted new gear box only had 30,000 miles fitted new seal ring at the same time, the gear changing is better but still wont change in to 5th untill it hits 4,000 rpm, and she feels a bit lumpy.

so far i have changed.
lamda probe
air mass meter
crank sensor
cam sensor
air filter
sparplugs
fuel filter
and it still doesn't run right.
