Hi,

Does anyone know how easy it might be to replace the rubber strips which run along the outer tops of the doors (i.e. the bits that seal against the window to stop water getting down into the doors)?

By 'top' of the door, I mean excluding the window frame.

Mine have what appears to be green lichen on them, which over the years has scratched the door glass slightly.

Thanks

How can you get lichen on your car? Does it sit in the open for long periods of time without a clean? Before changing the strip, why not make a post in the detailing section. Guess some stuff must exist to eliminate the greenery before you have a jungle growing out of the doors :D

Hi, first remove the outer trim, you will see an end cap(opening end of door) remove this
then you can insert a screwdriver and lever upwards, then work along with a lever, ideally
a flat piece of wood or plastic,so not to scratch the paintwork you will see the clips holding
the rubber, again prise off and remove. It's an easy job,but the retaining clips are likely to
be corroded,just be careful.

I might post up a photo before any attempting replacement (which despite the helpful description sounds fiddly enough for me waste hours on :D ).

No idea how it got there in the first place - it predates my ownership - but it is only on the surface that touches the glass, not the whole trim. :)

Use a weak bleach solution or similar to kill the mould and then apply Gummi-Pflege to get them looking good again.

Hi, somewhat of a thread resurrection but I've finally got around to taking some photos.

I hadn't seen the post about the Gummi stuff, that looks worth getting, thanks.

Here are some photos. Do you think if I scape off the rough stuff, apply a bit of diluted bleach to kill mould and then apply Gummi that these trims can be saved?

Thanks.

Hi,
Mine were exactly the same on my C43, mine are being replaced at the moment as the car is in the body shop being resprayed.
The outer black metal trim and the rubber are two separate items from MB, both are just less than £20 each, for that price i could,nt be bothered to mess about cleaning the rubber sills up.

My car C43AMG estate is outside all the time and I clean it every week and it has moss growing inside the window seal. Thanks for the info on how to remove the strip

I used my old RAC card to scrape the green stuff of the edge (slide it between the glass and the rubber) and then clean with a cloth and some good rubber protectant (I use Meguiars).

Works a treat and your windows will go up and down easier too.

i would change them it's not expensive and new seals protect the inner of your doors much better for water to leak in
