    Hi all,
I've recently purchased a 2006 W203 I'm wondering whether the auto box is a sealed unit? because on my recent searches, I've noticed I can buy a filter and gasket set.
Can I change the filter and the oil on this unit?

    Many thanks

The box is serviceable and is well worth doing.

Many thanks, can this be done by a local mechanic or would it be advisable to use an independent Merc garage.

A Merc indi would be your best bet. There are a couple of things that you need to consider when having the job done. 1. do you want a full flush 2. the pilot bushing that carries the electrical connector is normally changed at the same time,

If you're reasonably confident this is something you can diy, parts available easily from MB Newcastle on fleabay (and others), you'll need ramps/stands to get underneath...worth doing, even if some say autobox is sealed for life...

Literally thousands of posts on this subject and YouTube is full of info. ignore everyone who tells you this gearbox is sealed for life.
Get it done as soon as you can.
An indi will charge between £175 and £200 (ish). They rarely get all of the ATF out as 2 or 3 litres of old oil remain in the Torque convertor (it has no drain plug on this model) So the 5/6 litres of new oil is instantly 'contaminated' by the old stuff left behind. No one really seems to see this as a major problem (I do) but you could always change the ATF again a few weeks down the road if you feel the need.
