Hi All

Just joined - I wonder if anyone could help with my query - I had a good old rummage via search, but couldn't find anything relating to my problem, which is:

F/n/s wheel 'rattle', when going over a slightly broken surface, from the wheel. I'm pretty sure it isn't any suspension component - had it checked by MB dealer (least said the better..) & good local non-specialist indie - a drop link(?) type thing was replaced, but still the same problem.

A big clue (at least in my rookie analysis..) is the rattly sound goes away on application of brakes (just the merest touch needed) & when the brakes pads were renewed (OEM pads) & copper grease is liberally applied, the rattle goes away - but returns 2-3 months later.

I'm pretty convinced it's something to do with the pads or the pin that fits in the brake caliper - I'm loather to replace the whole caliper & disc assembly & wonder if anyone has thoughts as to cause/cure etc.?

Thank-you.

JollyMan

Do you have the sport pack brakes?

Did you replaced the pad mount? It is the part that clips into the pad carrier and it comes with the new pads.

hi C55

I bought the new pad from Merc dealer & got the local *trusted* garage to do them.

I don't recall seeing anything resembling a 'pad mount' inside the pad packet (all OEM branded etc.) I bought - although I'm not sure what if would look like anyway.

Is it a wire clip sort of arrangement? If so I think it was & was fitted.

Only one side (fns) 'rattles' like this btw.

cheers.

It is a shiney clip. There are two per side.

I'm getting new tyres in the next coupla days - I'll have it checked - thanks C55.

It's a shame I'm so far away from your op. (N.W) - otherwise I'd book an appt.!

If the clips prove to be ok & in place - are there any other things that might rattle?
(I'm thinking of the long pin (about 12mm thick & 50mm long) in the caliper itself particularly)

cheers

Hi Jollyman, where do you live ? you might be near another expert

>>Not too sure what you mean by the long pin

Inside the caliper, there's a stainless 'pin' (of dimensions above) that's between the 2 pads - it's covered in copper grease & needs to be pushed in when new pad go in - it's seems like that when I watch when it's done anyway.

(Far) North Wales, BP - for my sins ;)

hi C55 - not sure what an Elegance SE would do with 'sport brakes' though?

If I recall correctly, when I did a VIN check vs. car spec & didn't see anything about the above in the list...but anyway, how different are 'sport brakes' in operation & in relation to my particular problem?

cheers JM

Try removing the caliper bolts first.......

Whilst preparing for MOT today I noticed that the rattling clunking was due to the front calipers on my 51 plate W203, bolts removed, sliders removed, copper slipped and refitted, bolts torque locked and refitted... car now very different .............
