Hi all

Though I'm a really light foot driver still I'm getting really bad mileage please see attached image almost 75% of the tank is gone and she has only covered 207 miles and half of these are motorway miles, full mb service history with interim oil changes after ever 7-8000 miles.

Any suggestions?

I'm in Middlesex area.

Thanks
Salman

Petrol or Diesel?

Mine will do 42mpg on a very light footed motorway drive.

When I first bought my 220CDI 6 months ago I was lucky to get 40mpg on the motorway. A quick service by myself and a few tankfull of diesel with Redex in the tank. 75 mph on the motorway with cruise control on as much as possible 50-55mpg.I do about 2000 miles a month

thats got to be a newer model to get into 50's

on a good 50 mile run which i do twice a week
going at a decent pace i can get a range between 38 - 42
on the way back roughly same distance by a mile i take a different route across a few country roads. that figure can drop quite a lot. depending how giddy i get. but can be as low as 34 and generally a max of 40

going around local on short runs i'd be lucky to see over 30

worst bit was, i had a big service a while back and after.. my fuel consumption was poor for a little while. back as it was now though.....

take it to a specialist or dealer and get it on STAR - probably a bad MAF sensor - most likely. They are cheap - about £60 and easy to replace. £100 if you go to a dealer to fix.

Its a 2002 model whichis not very new. My 2005 Toyota Avensis 2.0L gives me about the same milage on the run. Maybe I have been lucky

It's a diesel, I use to get roughly 400 miles a tank all of a sudden dropped to less then 240-50 :(

I don't know if this will help but on the motorway in my old W211 E320 CDi I would get 46-50mpg at 75 mph, so I can't see how yours should be roughly the same?

mines Diesel 03 plate, Before I even got the thing home had to go to the lakes and it did 50mph on the motorway, Now I have cleaned the engine and fuel system Im expecting more. Used wynns injector cleaner and wynns lifters cleaner also help stop the diesel knock

Ok just done a run

45 miles car says average 50mph with 40 mpg.

I was keeping a good 75 on the motorway engine temp 65 on the back roads that raised to 80
External temp was about 11

Does that sound right.. With people claiming above 50

I have just arrived in Weymouth fom Newcastle for my work a round trip of 395 miles. My tank was full when I left home and it cost me £50 to fill the tank at £138.9 a litre of diesel. Haven't worked it out but should be close to 50mpg and thats with the climate control on as well

The on board computers are never very reliable, I always go for the tried and tested method of checking miles against amount of fuel used, check from full tank to full tank, and see the difference.

My computor says 45mpg, the actual is 29-34 depending on weight of right foot.

Ok below is the temperature after 17 miles of very light foot driving and out of 17 miles roughly 12 miles are motorway doing cruse control at 70 miles per hour. In that figure it shows I am getting 46.7MPG but trust me I dont get anything close to that.

It looks like your thermostat may be sticking open, and as I said the on board computors are pathalogical liers.
Get a new t/stat fitted, and you should see a difference (ignor what the car says)

I have a W209 CLK Sport 220 CDI and a recent run of 350 miles I could only get 37 mpg and that was a steady 70-75.My previous 220 CDI saloon manual I would get nearer 50.I did think an auto would be about 5 mpg less but not 10.I would be happy with low 40s.:dk:

Definatly a problem with your thermostat unless your rad is 100% antifreeze
Also do you drive abroad alot, as your speedo is set for Kph

No it's not. They all show KPH somewhere (unless they've been modified) - it's a legal rewquirement in the UK.
