W203 270 CDI avanguard

Hi Guys,
just joined today.
im currently looking at a W203 270 CDI 2001 auto. The car has done 40,000km. bodyworks and interior are fine. Just afew question in regards of the undercarriage and the engine itself.
I test drove the car and it makes a rattle noise when it hits an uneven road. Is this a tie rod or a stabliser bushes problem? Is this prone problem for the C class?

Second question, is th steering rack and pinion or ball and nut? When the car makes a U turn the sterring doesnt want to swing back. And the steering feels tight when turning not a smooth action. What seems to be a problem?

Third question. The car has been running on a high sulphur fuel, how can i tell whete the engine is still ok or not? It ran with high sulphur fuel probably for 30,00km. How can i check the injectors are ok and the fuel pump is ok as well? The car seems to have lots of power:D . For a C270 CDI after a drive coming to a park do you have to idle to cool the turbo? Are the water pump and the oil pump running after switch off or not? How crucial is it for the turbo to cool down for this engine. A freind of mine said that continental cars do not need to cool down like the japanese cars is this true?

What should i watch out for? this particular model? Any tips and adivice on this? My main worry is the engine and the turbos itself. Thanks in advance
 
1) this is a long running issue, i had this problem for over 2 years and only just cured the fault which was the front bearing it was cheap to replace about £15 and it seems to have cured the fault, at the same time i replace the droplinks and the ARB bushes. (there are two one is heavy duty and is the one closest to the cabin and the one to replace is the one towards the front of the car and is sligtly cheaper quality) to inspect it just get a bar and test for play.

2) with regards to the engine i would look at the engine wiring loom (in the front sam board) and look for oil, this is common for the 111 engine, yours is a diffrent engine but woth a look.

3)not sure about the steering!

4) not sure about the turbo issue but in one of my older cars i have a turbo timer built in to my alarm system which allows for the turbo to cool down even if i lock the car, and it turns its self off.

search the forum for w203 common faults there are a few some are esy to ure some are more difficult.

The high sulpher fuel will not be good for the Cat as it can block it in extreme circumstances, but it will be good for the fuel injection system as a whole because the sulpher provides lubrication.

The knocking will be the ARB links and maybe balljoints. Both are common problems.
 
steering should be rack and pinion.

Another common problem is the front wheel consumption mainly at the external side. It has been discussed few days ago in a tread under wheel section. Mainly with sport suspension
 
The car when in today to the dealer for an inspection. And found the following.
1. the strut link need replacement
2. All te bushings for the front end stablosers.
3. the fuel delivery plastic pipes 2x
4. heter coil.
5. engine mount.
6. The plastic bit that covers the transmission in the undercarraige is cracked.
That summurizes the car. It al adds up to roughlyGBP $1200 for parts only. Labor extra.
Another thing is im concern about the sterring. Its not smoorh when turning is it normall for the C class?

Where is the rattling sound coming from ? My car is now starting to rattle like mad when travelling over uneven surfaces. It sounds like it's coming from the rear headrests. I have used blue-tack, duck tape, rolled up pieces of cloth to dampen the rattling but to no avail. It's driving me mad. It's like driving a transit van at the moment :(

Go to a tyre shop have them to put your car on a hoist and you should see the problem.
Mine was the strut linakage and the bushings in the multi linkage. and engine mount. Does your car rattles when it starts up and when shutting down?

hi there the strut links and the anti roll bar bushes are not that expensive i got mine for £30 the front bearing for the wishbone is £15, the plastic should be no more than £40 i paid £30 for the front engine cover and thats larger than the transmission one. the things i mentioned is a diy and takes no more than about 1-2 hours tops. engine mount is tricky but you could also diy

the fuel delivery plastic pipes and the heater coil im not too sure about as i have not done these but the heater coil should not be to much trouble.

£1200 seems a bit over the top for just parts i would ask for an estimate which shows the breakdown od the cost.

If you are in Jakarta , be careful of Pertamina bio-diesel and kerosene (minyak tanah) being added , change your fuel filters frequently .
The other problem you are face with is finding a fast bit of road to give it a clear out .

Now for the feel of the steering. When i test drove this car the sterring feels not smooth. It feels it doesnt have oil. No sound coming from the power steering. When it turns the sterring wheel it feels like something is holding back the steering thus not the smooth action of turn. Can some body point me at the right direction? When i took it for inspection the guy told me that its the characteric of this car. And i thought it was a bit weird.

I got to make a desicion within these couple of days. Thanks in advance guys.
 
sounds like it is very low on fluid , can feel "lumpy" - I just topped mine up , and also changed it by sucking the reservoir empty and refilling an couple of times - the old fluid was much heavier than then new MB fluid - I had a nasty noise at full lock which has now disappeared -

I have access to diagnostic equipment there if required .

Hmm, dont know aout the power sterring fluid. I know hat you mean and how it feels whe its low on fluid amd this doesnt feel like that. It felt more like the steering a turning in a "section" of the circle on the sterring where it should have been a smooth action. I cant find the right word for it.
Where are you based in Fred? Dont tel me you are an Indonesian?:).
I dont use bio diesel except for a normal plunger type diesel. Even my Kijang Innova is using Shell at the moment:rock:. Dont trust the Dex from Pertamina as they are probably mixed with kerosene during transport by the drivers who delivers them.
 
I know - I live there ! not Jakarta but East Java , though I have a lot of work coming up in Karawang .

Could be loads of stuff - does this happen at the same point every revolution of the steering wheel ? - nearly posted that in Indonesian to liven up things a bit -

what sort of money do they want for the car , and has all the pajak and bea cukai been accounted for ?

Yea Fred it seems to happens on the same spot in the reviluton of the sterring wheel.
Yes the car is ATPM which is imported officially by Dipo motor. Pricing wise is Rp300 million and we are still negotiaing at the moment. Cos hes actually a friend of mine. But will let you know by tommorow.
Btw whats the eastern promise kemang?
So i guess you a foreigner living and working in Indonesia?

You need to take a look at all of the drive from steering wheel down to the steering rack - maybe something is binding - my best guess at the moment -

Also kust found out that brabus sells kits to mod the diesel engine!!:rock: Not vey impressive performace though. I guess cos of the emmision std?
