2001 w203 coupe
hi all -i have had a c200k w203 coupe for the last 2 months and started getting some gear box probs - Its a 6 speed semi auto and comes up "transmiss visit workshop" and wont change above 3rd until i switch off/on. I have had a indi look at it with STAR and quote £350 for a new pump to be fitted.

My other issue is i have noticed it judders when pulling away in 1st or slowly in 2nd.

i am lead to believe these semi autos are trouble compared to a standard autos so looking for some advise on the judder. I dont want to spend £350 on it if i then have another problem that might cost £xxxx! Apart form that i really like my 1st merc :)

Not sure if this is related or even the right gearbox - extract from Wikipedia.

Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes used a system similar to the VW Autostick, called Hydrak. Hydrak had one major flaw- the oil supply for the torque converter was sealed within the converter itself and did not circulate via a pump, and also had no oil cooler. Idling in gear for even short periods would overheat the oil and burn up the seals in the converter, which would then need to be replaced.

Semi auto?

Sure it's not a 5 speed with tip?

722.6

no - its def 6 speed, its a 2001 c200k coupe. There arent any paddles behind the steering wheel, just the gearstick with auto or the ability to flick forward/back to move up or down the gears.

The mechanic did say they were in the vito vans and thats where he saw the troubles

I think its a 5spd 722.6 you have & the oil pump is not the fault if the pump was faulty you would have no drive or reverse what was the code you got when the car was connected to the star

looked in the handbook and its a sequentronic 6 speed - apparently there is a hydraulic pump and it needs replacing as it is not getting up to pressure causing the warning

Spot on cheeky chops, well you did have the advantage of the handbook. lol

Lifted from another MB site..... and try googling mercedes sequentronic

Yes they did, it was called Sequentronic and it definitely was available on the C-class (and in Sprinter vans). I had one - it was very good. You could drive it as a 6-speed clutchless manual or as a fully automatic. I preferred manual driving (except in heavy traffic) but my other half preferred to treat it as an ordinary automatic.

I have never heard of one of these transmissions in a C class but hey hoo there you go the VW Crafter has the same transmission as yours & the pumps are high failure

Been googling, bit of info for anyone who is looking........

It is called the "sprintshift" in the sprinter van. Seems like the pump is a week point but there are a few van drivers who report 500k+ on the original gearbox + couple of pumps and couple of clutches! It could also be the relay that is the issue rather than the pump. Mine is showing P2080 (iirc) low pressure. If i try to select a gear within a second of starting at cold it shows "select gear again". It can take upto 10secs for pressure to be sufficient at cold, longer if you have pump problems

The sequentronic is a std 6sp manual with hydraulic controlled shifts. Extra ECU and sensors to monitor movement. Star is needed with a clutch change as the clutch bite points need to be reprogrammed. Star also has to put it into a "learn" mode so it identifies the exact cog location are to ensure smooth shifting, manufacturing tolerances/wear can affect this so ask your mechanic to reprogram

Pump is approx £200 + fitting. GB oil change best at 150k. Clutch kit is rather more at £500+ inc slave and fly. Some interesting pics here for future reference:

Hope info is right/of use to someone....

edit: i should say, mine is just annoying at the moment when it wont got past 3rd. Stop/start clears it and it might not occur again for a 100m or a few days. Alternatively, if i flick to "neutral" then back accross is usually engages 4th or 5th. I wont be getting it fixed until it is a major PITA/dead!!! :D

Seqentronic gearbox problems - is it battery?

Reading up on this since I have "Transmission - go to workshop" display on my C220CDI coupe. Came up yesterday, but read on....

Car juddered a bit when parking (reverse) and when pulling away for few days this past week. Being a girl, I drove on, ignoring it, and TBH it gets better when you get going.... Car DOES use all the gears. I've read about some which I guess fall into "safe" mode.

Then, yesterday morning, I got the "Transmission - go to workshop" error message and I retired to do online research - hence this post. Can someone engage with it and see whether my logic is correct?

So we have car displaying more symptoms when it's been standing and just starting up. Once going, it HAS become normal.

A few weeks ago, I had the scenario that the car refused to select a gear. Turning it off and on again "solved" that problem. I am building a picture here - read on.

Juddering when starting out, jumps a bit - tricky to park sometimes. Leaps at parking speeds.

I've been using a LOT of battery recently - mainly blower usage - these cars fog up dreadfully and the air con needs re-gassing. So blower on all the time.

So - car breaks down yesterday when I first try to start it. I call RAC. Leave hazard lights on, walk back indoors. When RAC comes, car will NOT obey key fob. Have to open it with the key blade.... So battery seems to be flat.

Here comes the logic bit. Battery has no life in it, and I am now having error messages. Car HAS been "getting better" once I am under way. Surely this is NOT a gearbox or transmission (diff) type problem? I'd have it ALL the time, wouldn't I? Seems to be an electrical or electronic problem to me. Get the alternator going, battery recovers from start, and all is ok.

Is my logic faulty?

I am yet to test the battery for voltage (it IS voltage I need to check, isn't it?) and no STAR readings. Car is waiting for tow to my favoured workshop (indy guy but NOT Merc specialist - don't know if he has STAR). Do I need this tow or am I simply looking at a new battery?

Low voltage usually brings about ESP/BAS/ABS error messages. Not sure about auto transmission being affected.

"transmiss" problem was the battery!

Well, all sorted on mine! All kinds of "TRANSMISS - WORKSHOP" drama, jolting and jumping in first and reverse... and when put on STAR, what does it show? Low voltage! New battery and all is fine and dandy. So guys - CHECK FOR LOW VOLTAGE before looking at anything on the tranmission if this happens.
