Hi all,

I picked up a 2005 (55) C180 avantgarde saloon with 60k on the clock as a run around for the year. (Had to sell my Disco due to wedding plans )

I'm wondering if anyone can provide any insight to the following issues i've noticed:

1) Gear changes are not smooth, and struggle to cope under fast acceleration (missed gears) or decceleration (jerky). The disco was an auto so i know you can't just plant the foot - but i feel like i have to be incredibly gentle under acceleration.

2) Drove into the office car park and when i engaged reverse to park.... Nothing. Slid it back in to drive - Nothing. Had to switch engine off and on again to get the gear to engage.

3) To top it all off - engine mgmt light came on yesterday.

Anyone have any insight to the issues described - and could the Mgmt light be connected to the issues i feel i have with the gearbox?

Much appreciated

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Ideally you need to find a local MB specialist who has the Star computer. It could be something as simple as a low fluid level, these gearboxes are usually smooth and reliable.. One common problem is leaking from the electrical connector in the gearbox (known as a Pilot bush), these are cheap to replace if that is causing the problem but if left unattended then ATF can wick up and damage the transmission ECU.

Odd gearbox behaviour has been known with a faulty Mass Airflow Sensor but that does not explain the reverse gear not selecting.

Do not be tempted to top up the ATF, firstly there will likely be no dipstick and secondly the ATF needs to be checked at 80deg C.

If you post your location I am sure someone will recommend a good MB specialist near to you.

Good luck and report back what you find.

Thanks David,

I'm located in Aberdeen, Scotland.

I appreciate the information - i'm not technical at all with cars - but i find it's useful to be armed with a little bit of chat for the mechanic and the knowledge from these forums are usually as reliable as anything! There's a German specialist indy not far from me so i'm going to try book it in there for the diagnosis - providing they have the star computer.

I'll report back how i get on. Here's hoping it's nothing serious!

Update....

Local garage ran the diagnostics and got some 39 Fault codes!! Mostly to do with the gear box and particularly the change between 1 + 2.

Mechanic was talking in fluid car speak.... but mentioned that they had ordered a new "switch" which they will fit before testing the ATF level.... Hopefully this solves the problem!
