W203 C200 (2006) Electrical failure?

I started the car yesterday in mild weather (about 10C) and it leapt to life as usual (new battery just over a month ago - possible issue?). As I pulled away I noticed that the fuel showed as empty, but with no light. OK, I will fill it up, I thought. Then as I checked the speed I noticed the indicator wasn't working and nor was the rev counter or temperature gauge. The headlights are set to auto and the light indicator was on in broad daylight. I turned that off and the central LED in the instrument panel also vanished but came back when I switched the lights back to auto. There was no indicator light sign or sound. I got home and turned the engine off. Central locking no longer works, and when I tried to start the car again the key didn't activate the unlock mechanism (I tried new batteries, too), so I couldn't turn the key and start the car.

Any clues? Thanks

Hello and welcome . Disconnect the alarm sounder unit behind the left front wheel , behind the wheel arch liner. This unit has its own batteries and when the thing rot's out it can (and does) cause all kinds of electrical mischief.

It's easy to get to , just un plug it and tape over the plug . you will soon know if thats the fault. The car will run fine without it. Let us know how you get on
