The auto gearbox has a tendency to stick intermittently in gear and wont shift into any other gear. When the ignition is switched off and then back on the gearbox all is okay again, for a while.
It mainly happens when in traffic when the gearbox is up and down through the gears. This is when it will on occasion become stuck in a gear.
I suspect it could be the gearbox contact assembly which is connected to the solenoids.
I've been to the main dealer but the cost seems excessive.
My question is this.....Of the other non OEM suppliers who sell this contact plate part, at less than half of the Mercedes price, any good? as their costs are far below the Mercedes OEM cost.
I'm in the UK and want it to be sourced here.

How is the gearbox atf level ,
when was the last gearbox service
what mileage are you on
Fault codes ? Ideally from MB Star at an independent specialist

I'm not 100% sure if the oil has ever been changed and its never been serviced.
Its done 180K+ and the gearbox has been playing up for a few years now but because it would run normally after a restart I've been living with it.
Its only recently it remained stuck in gear so I was forced to take it to a garage.
The garage could only see, but could not read the codes as the codes were readable only to a Merc dealer, however when the codes were cleared, the car was okay to drive again.
What would you suggest?

Well a service at a MB indy would be a good idea you don't say where you are so we cannot offer a suggestion about a indy

Jesus it needs a gearbox service! Every 40k is recommended . It’s MB specialist time buddy

First job get the gearbox oil and filter changed, not surprised it not shifting properly, you can DIY it for £150.

Codes need to be read first, If the conductor plate is goosed there is no point in servicing the box then having to start again to do the plate. Just a waste of time and fluid Etc.

yes i think your right.
I've been watching youtube and I think the problem could be related to the sensor that's on the connector plate. Mine seems to fails when I'm in town traffic rather than motorway cruising.

Were are you located, I have Star if your close to me.

Its finally sorted.
Had the garage remove the gearbox tray to read the OEM number moulded on the plastic plate and sourced the connector plate myself for £150ish here in the UK.
Garage did the rest and it works a treat.
Saved many many hundreds of £'s based on Mercedes prices.
My car lives on to fight another day. YIPEE
