C270 CDI W230
Greetings one and all,

We've just bought an old C270 to use as a second car whilst we are in Spain.
When we viewed the car it had the radio/sat nav unit fitted (Standard ??) but when we tried to use it, it threw up a warning which seemed to indicate that the mapping CD was missing. The dealer said he would sort it.
However, when we collected the car the dealer said the unit was not working and he had replaced it with a working Mercedes radio unit. He said that the sat nav unit was NOT a factory fitted unit and had been retro fitted by one of the previous owners.

I suspect that the unit was factory fitted and he simply didn't want to replace the missing sat nav CD or that the unit was indeed not working but he did not want to spend the cash to rectify the problem.
Does anyone know if there is any way of checking from the chassis number if the sat nav was factory fitted or not ???

Thanks

Try getting hold of the car's Data Card. You can obtain it by subscribing to a one-year membership with MB's Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC):

http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/welcome.jsp

(You can also ask for a Data Card printout at a Mercedes Benz dealership, or one of the members here could print it for you if they have the car's VIN).

The Data Card will show what options are officially fitted to your car. Said that, if the retrofit was done properly, the dealer would have updated the Data Card in retrospect. The Data Card will only help if the unit was badly retrofitted and the Data Card was not updated by the dealer.

You can also find out more about the COMAND unit that came with your car here:

Greetings,
Many thanks for the insight and info. I've already tried the Comand web site and whilst it has info on the unit it has no info about 'factory fit' so that was a bit of a dead end.
I'll go round to the local MB dealer later today and inquire about the Data Card ... and if I have no luck, I'll post the VIN number here to see if someone can do a print out as you suggest.
Do you know if it's possible to connect the Sat Nav/CD Head unit directly into the MB Star system to check to see if it is working or not or does it need to be refitted into the dash ?
Thanks again for the valuable and helpful input :)

I am afraid that this is as far as my own knowledge goes... I suggest you contact comandonline for quote, Alfie from comandonline is a forum member and should be able to assist further.
