W203 C320 CDI - removing door lock?

Yesterday my wife found that the driver door handle inside would not work
The interior handle is disconnected from the mechanism....
Pulling the door card off I found that the cable has broken

So I have a few questions for the experts on this forum:
1. How do I get the lock mechanism out of the door?
It's like a jigsaw puzzle in there!
2. Can I buy just a new cable or do I have to buy the whole assembly?

Any information especially with pictures would be gratefully received

You have to buy a lock.

You may have to remove the window regulator too. You will have to remove the outside door handle. It is fiddly but do able in an hour or so.

Side airbag removed, so far....
....and I'll do the window regulator after lunch.

Any tips on the outside door handle please :fail
It was proving a right pain to try and get off before I posted this please for help

RESOLVED - Another update:
Yesterday I managed to get it all apart with the help of you guys
Decided to changed the complete lock mechanism to deal with the broken cable issue. So phoned our local MB stealers in Ipswich. Yes they had one in stock.
Collected the new lock mechanism and fitted it this afternoon.
It went smoothly
However, and here's the rub, the lock button does not power down to lock it.
It does power up to unlock. Even tried with the dash buttons - still the same.
Plugged the old lock mechanism in to try that, thinking that the new MB may be faulty....
The buttom on my old one does not now pop up
Am I doing something wrong?
Have I buggered something up? Such as the control unit (in the door)
Anyone else had this problem or can advise please?
RESOLVED - not sure what I did but after pulling it all apart and putting it back together it works fine.
Probably something to do with remote locking program after battery was disconnected......
