I'm hoping someone can help out there. My 2004 C270 diesel was running fine, got home switched it off, next day it wouldn't start. Thinking it may be out of diesel I put a gallon in it and away it went, went to filling station and found I could only get 40 or so litres in it. A few days later a similar thing happened, showed 1/4 full wouldn't start, added a gallon, it started but at the filling station only took about 40 litres so there was already fuel in it. I have looked on the forums but see conflicting suggestions for similar posts but they are all older posts going back a few years. Does anyone have any ideas?

Glow plugs not working correctly? But you should have some warning lights for those.

Cold start is OK it's just trouble when the fuel level gets to about a 1/4 full, when reference is given to left and right side is that as if sitting in the drivers seat facing forward ? Is the fuel pick up on the left or the right side?

Won't be o rings
Won't be glow plugs

This is probably a in tank issue, when your gauge says 1/4 tank the pump/feed side has no fuel In it, it will need both units in the tank replacing, new are £500 or something stupid like that.

I've had a look at the tank units today, what I don't understand is that the left (passenger) side unit has a 5 pin electrical plug going to in, there are 3 very fine wires which I assume are for the gauge and two heavier wires that I would assume are for a pump in the tank. The two heavier wires connect to nothing on the tank unit (there are no corresponding pins in the unit despite wires to the plug). Each unit has a gauge sender unit on it but it appears nothing else that's electrical, any ideas ?:dk:

A friend of mine had the same problems with the same model of car as you are having. It turned out the tank was full of gunge which didn't allow the proper pick up of fuel ( and gave false fuel guage readings) . I suspect you may have to remove the tank and examine it ( drain fuel out first)
