Searching through the forums it seems this is a reasonably common issue. I have an 04 C270CDI and yesterday I noted a distinct smell of exhaust fumes coming in to the car. I also felt that the car had lost some of its performance so on arriving home I popped the bonnet and found oil on top of the engine cover.

Removing the cover and I could hear a very distinct "chuff, chuff, chuff" noise.

It seems injector number 1 is leaking.

I read up on the work needed and thought I'd at least pop the injector off to see how big a deal it would be. It took about 15 mins to get the injector off and another 10 minutes to clean it.

Unfortunately I work away from home in the week so I am going to have to hand it over to my local garage to finish. I've popped the injector back in with the old seal and obviously it's still leaking (well I admit I was hoping it'd fix itself LOL)

I'm going to be driving the car to Germany and back on Friday (there and back the same day) - realistically do you think the garage will be able to get it sorted that quickly and would you suggest I get them to do the other 4 at the same time?

Oh and i bitterly regret putting that flaming Miller's Oil Diesel treatment in, it's too much of a coincidence that 100 miles later this happened..

The injector seat will need to be re-cut before the new seal is put in, how long that takes depends on the garage having the knowledge and correct tool, as for the others, if not leaking then deal with them later.

As you say, it is a common problem so you cannot really associate the use of a fuel additive with this.

Tell that to my wife LOL

But yes, I'm sure you're right.

I've ordered a seal kit for all 5 (I'll keep them in the car for the inevitable failure of the other 4).

I was thinking of buying a seat cutter - any thoughts on this one:

Laser 4597 Diesel Injector Re-Seating Cutting Tool Set, Mercedes BMW Chrysler | eBay

Seems to be the correct size, if the garage can't do the car in time I'll just have to do it myself one night

Could not comment on the cutter but hopefully you will have an uneventful journey:)

Please don't cut the seats unless you have to they are usually polished to effect a seal and re-cutting should be a last resort on these engines.

MB technical info recommends not to cut the seats but clean and polish them.

You will need to replace the bolt as well as using special grease to coat the injector body and bolt threads on replacement.

:)

Cheers, I was kinda hoping that the cutter I'm buying would also work to clean the seat if I just apply a lot less pressure (so just cleaning the carbon off rather than cutting any metal) but I hear what you say.

I like the look of the MB cleaning kit, maybe I'd be better off with that?

I've ordered the stretch bolts and special grease etc so with luck it'll all be sorted in time for the trip.

It'll be fun using the TVR for the commute for a few days :-)
