W203 pre-facelift centre console removal

Hope this makes sense......

Need to get behind the console to change my phone holder. I have print-outs that tell me what to do and all is OK, except....

You are supposed to press a little lever in the vents which allows them to swivel upwards, thus revealing the screw. This is fine on the left one but on the right it appears that the guy who installed the kit (can't find him!) managed to loosen the "fins" which seems to mean that there is no little lever obvious. Anybody know any tricks of the trade? Trying to avoid what the dealers would charge for doing it!

This is a custom job using a non-Mercedes kit. No person here is going to know how to fix it without some photos.
