Hey Guys,

My car won't change gears now. Won't go up or down. Stays stuck in D, can't set W/S option either.

What could the fault be? I was driving and the car changed into 3rd, but slipped, cue loads of revs but no gear selection. It finally got back into 2nd and stays stuck in 2nd.

Need your help, thanks.

Search gearbox oil level either here or google.

Yeah, going to take it to the Independant on Monday. Read elsewhere it could be a battery problem since it's jamming the tiptronic and w/s control. Also speedtronic error message is displayed on the screen. So going to top up the battery water and see what it does. Only installed the battery 8 Months ago.

Bloke at work his Rover non start traced to damaged wiring on the rear tailgate, repaired wiring, new battery one week later wont start, test new battery and its a duff one:D

Your gearbox has gone into 'limp home mode' ... could be a variety of causes, you need to get the fault codes read.

**Update**

Took it to it to an Independent he said something is up with the electrical system in gearbox and has said it will cost £225 for a new one. He tried to clear the error codes but they wouldn't budge.

The car has done 141k Miles and is a '01 on a Y. Does this sound right?

Has the gearbox oil ever been changed? Ask the guy to check the level as if it's even a tiny bit low the the shifts can be erratic or non-existant!

Yeah I asked him first thing. He said gearbox oil is fine. He is going to change that for me also when he carries out the work tommorow. Problem is with these kind of things I didn't check before hand, as I didn't know how. But he is a good bloke so see what he does.

The battery is fine. He said it's a common problem on these cars.

Sounds like the conductor (aka electrical) plate, fairly common.

*Update*

The mechanic fitted a new electrical plate. All was well, car started, changed gears everything. As I just came off the road that leads into the garage, the car stopped. Just stopped. Started it, it would crank but wouldn't start.

I have the same problem when the car is on a hill facing upwards. It takes a while to crank, I think the fuel pump maybe on it's way out. However, I tried to start it and was greeted by the Battery/Alternator visit workshop on the screen message.

Called the mechanic and he's took it back in. God knows what's wrong with it.

Couldn't be due to a Chip I installed in the car? From the racechip website?

Unless I am mistaken, that doesnt look like a chip you've installed but a very expensive resistor.

I would remove it permanently.

Do you reckon so?

I mean it's made the car quite quick. Going to go pick the car up in a bit and I'll see what he says.

*Update*

Car wasn't starting due to the chip. So have taken it off. All is well now. Now time to look for a decent remapper.

Actually, it seems that it has made the car infinitely slow.....
