Hello all,

I was out driving a couple of days ago, I braked to stop and talk to a neighbour and 'EBD,ABS,ESP inoperative See owner's manual' came up on the display when I set off again. At the same time the steering became stiff and there was a message 'Run flat indicator inoperative'. The indicators/lights for ABS and traction control also came up. If I stop the car and restart the messages go away until I reach 10-15 mph.

I wasn't overly concerned as I thought it sounded like a wheel speed sensor.

I have a Delphi ds150e diagnostic scanner which obviously crude compared to the Merc Star system. The Delphi scanner came up with 2 fault codes '5945 ESP/BAS control module internal fault, intermittent' and '5001 ESP/BAS control module internal fault, intermittent', no mention of wheel speed sensors.

I have found a company that repairs ABS modules for W204 in the UK at around £200 + VAT (12 months guarantee) although they don't quote the part number for the C63, A2049005403. The advantage of this is that I can fit it myself in 10 minutes and it doesn't require to be coded. The other sensible option would be to get a used one from a breakers, but that would require coding. I think a new ABS module from Merc is around £1000 + VAT.

The only thing that bothers me is the message, 'run flat indicator inoperative' which would lead me to wheel sensors.

Would a faulty ABS module cause the run flat indicator to be inoperative?

Nigel

Thanks, I do like to do most of my work myself but may be forced to do that.

I've been doing amateur mechanics since the 80's when money was tight. I recently changed an engine on my daughters ML so not handless (I'm an Engineer).
But yeah it may come to that....:)

Similar thing last year on my CLS55. It was the SBC unit. £2600 to replace with a new one. You gotta pay to play.

Well you've cheered me up no end. :wallbash: :)

I had the exact same on my S204 C63 & it was the ABS module. I believe it does need coding though as I had the xentry printout of what it entails. I can't tell you the cost as it was replaced under warranty & I no longer own the car.

Could be almost anything. As said an hour on STAR will be money well invested. I just had the SBC unit replaced on my wifes SL and the cost was £1500 all in inc VAT.

The OP of course doesn't have SBC on their vehicle.

The tyre pressure monitoring warning might be showing if your vehicle uses the older system that looks at relative wheel rotation speeds rather than individual pressure sensors.

Hi Nigel

Like another member has written, I also had this on a C63AMG and it was the ABS module.
I can tell you for sure it also does need coded to the car, quite a number of years ago when this happened to me, 2016 I think.
Brand new module cost 1K, my indy suggested a used one, but it wasn't really that much cheaper in the overall scheme of things.

Hello again,

Thanks for your replies

A bit of an update, after reading the experience of ShaunB and GillyC63 I decided to have the ABS module repaired.

I contacted Merc and they are asking £874 + VAT for a new ABS module and they are on back order. The new module would also require coding. I phoned a company called controlunits.co.uk and spoke to a technician, he told me if I had the 5001 error code then it was a faulty ABS module. Since I was having my own module repaired no coding required.

I fitted the repaired ABS module last night and it was successful. Including VAT and delivery the cost of repair was £252, 24 months warranty. I posted it on Monday and the repaired unit was back with me on Thursday.

In the C63 it took around 15 minutes to fit, the 2 screws at the bottom of the module are awkward to fit because of the frame for the heat shield. The Merc WIS states you should use a 70mm long T20 for these screws. I bought this set when the ABS module was away for repair to ease reassembly:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B086K2DDS8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 .

I've taken the car to work today and all good so far, I'll update if there are any further problems.
