W204 C Class Sat Nav COMAND update

My W204 has been into the local dealer for its first service. I have noticed that the Sat Nav data on the COMAND system is now at least 12 months out of date - I have missed the turnigns off the A1 where the roundabouts have been replaced by slip roads!

On my old C Class I bought an update CD normally from eBay. The W204 COMAND is a DVD and also Hard Disk based system. My dealer said I need to buy an update DVD but didn't offer any details. Does anybody know how I go about updating the SatNav and/or have an update disc?

Thanks in advance

I have the hard disk based system and asked about this earlier in the year as the car is only 6 months old but would appear to have a fairly old (>12 months) version of map data. The dealer said for the HDD version there was no update yet. He also reckons that it can only be done at the dealer as there isn't a DVD as such - how much that is true I don't know.

Oh dear!

If the update means a trip to the dealer it will not be cheap - I wonder if anybody has a definitive answer?..................

Aren't the W204 Comand maps updated from a DVD equally as the HDD Comand on a W221?

Yes they are.

The disks are available but I suspect they are not cheap. I'm looking into it at the moment.

Technically I would imagine that each owner needs to buy a disk or pay for one to be applied to their HD comand. However I suspect that there will be a lot of disk sharing going on in the future.

I would be interested in any info that comes from this, as I don't mind paying for an update if needed - just the dealer seems a little vague on if/when/how.

If it works anything like the Garmin DVD map update system then you would be required to enter a (paid for!) "unlock code" into the device as part of the map update process. The "unlock code" is uniquely generated by Garmin for the target device, so many people could share the DVD with the data on it, but they could only get it to update their device if they have a device-specific unlock code.

We have two disks coming in very soon.:)

I heard rumours that the discs would become VIN locked but it has not happened so far. My opinion is that they should do it, honest people would not have to pay as much for the discs then as they do now.

That's just plain daft. I don't know the price of the European cartography update DVD for COMAND, but Garmin actually give the DVD's away and charge you US$75 for the unlock code.

Plain bonkers!

 If its really £237 for the update then thats just plain daft! A brand new satnav costs half that and the updates come for free. If MB carry on in this way they will cut their own throat as people will quite simply not pay for the satnav at first vehicle purchase either.

We've argued this before but I haven't seen any satnav that would have free map updates (excluding perhaps a limited period, paid with the purchase).

Nokia maps on a phone would have free map updates, all over the world but I don't consider even that free because in their case you have to pay for the navigation licence.

But it is true that one can get a simple TomTom device including maps with the price of an MB map update. Perhaps MB assumes that each buyer anyway shares the DVD with a couple of others. This is why I would prefer the "locked" solution. It would still not be equally cheap as for those devices that sell a lot more.

The current version should be A204 827 57 59

The Milton Keynes shop website reckons that part no was available from April 2008, so you would hope that a MY09 car has that version in it, but my COMAND reports back a map data version of Q4 2007, so who knows.

I am hesitant to buy that version as the dealer states no later version is currently available.

I suspect Alfie may be able to comment further once he gets some discs.

(couldn't see your link as it requires registration or something).

I just updated my Comand HU with the following:

BQ 6 46 0247
A2048275859 (for North Am)
i believe the update for was 1QTR 2008?
