Hi all,

Hope you are well.

I have just acquired a 58 reg C320 CDI saloon and the battery seems on its way out as even after a 2 hour drive back home, its voltage is still showing 12.1V (was also 12.1V when we went to view the car).

I am shopping for a battery however, I need to know if the car needs to be told that a new battery has been put in because it appears it has the IBS (intelligent battery system) module on the negative terminal wire. In my brother's 2008 330d which also has the IBS on the negative terminal, the Power management ECU had a "battery reset" option which was reset when the new battery was installed.

Also, by looking at the battery, it doesn't appear to be a AGM as there is no mention of this on it, can someone confirm if these cars had AGM or NON-AGM batteries?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Normal engine MB has no battery resets, those are BMW stuff...

Hybrid vehicles are different animals.

Your W203 car won't need a battery reset, it's a straightforward swap.

At most you'll need to reset the electric windows, but you can use a 'memory saver' to keep the various ECU powered while you are replacing the battery, check on eBay for '12 Volt car Memory Saver'.

It won't have AGM battery either, these came in as standard with the ECO Start/Stop function, around 2010.

It’s a 204 is it not?

You still won’t need to do a reset

Don’t think it’ll be AGM either.

No harm in fitting an agm . Winters on its way .

Dyslexia strikes again.... 'C320' isn't the same as 'W203'.....

Thanks all for your replies.

I couldn't find much info on the net hence why I started the thread.

The reason I thought a battery reset was required was due to the IBS module on the negative terminal. I assumed that all cars that have a IBS would require a battery reset....

Anyways, if it doesn't need a reset, that is great as I can simply buy one and plug it in and job done!

Thanks all.

Update: It turns out the battery in my car is a AGM. As its made by Varta. I went on their site, entered the MB part number and it came up with only 1 result, the Varta Silver Dynamic AGM battery.

So, I will be looking to buy a Exide EK950 95Ah 850CCA as this is cheaper than Varta and has the exact same spec as the MB battery in the car at the moment.

I am still doubtful whether the battery reset is required...Has anyone one on this forum changed a battery in their W204 with a IBS module on their negative terminal? If so, have you been monitoring your battery voltage level after the change, assuming you did not do a battery reset?

Thanks.

You don't need to reset the battery in your W204, but if you will need to reset the auto windows and steering wheel angle (by turning the steering wheel full lock to lock after you start it up the first time after changing over the battery).

I replaced the battery and had no error lights or messages...

However, today (roughly 1 week after changing the battery) the EML light has come on. I ordered a OBD2 Generic code reader, connected it to the car and I am getting a 'linking error'. Works on my dad's 2008 S320CDI and my brother's 2008 330d???

Really annoying...looks like I will have to pay a visit to my local MB independent garage.

Have you checked all your fuses located in the fusebox?

Out of interest, did you have to reset your power windows and/or the steering by turning lock to lock?

Yes, apparently the fuse for the OBD2 in my W204 model is in the engine bay, fuse number 16 on a 5 amp, which is fine not blown. I understand there is another OBD2 fuse location, which is in the rear boot fuse box area, I can't remember the number but its in the Yellow fuse holder location - my car does not have a assigned fuse on that slot...
Maybe the code reader plug is not sitting correctly in the port, will have to check today again.

Re the windows and steering, I did not reset any of these as there were no issues or messages...windows also work fine. The car even remembered the radio station, memory seat/steering position etc... I think the car has a volatile memory feature which was maybe introduced in late 2008, as mine is a September 58 plate model and has the "year change upgrade" option on the VIN list.
