I have an W204 and last week, the issue started. Got home from the school run and put it in reverse, nothing. Tried D again, nothing. I flicked the engine off, and when I turned it back on, everything worked fine and I was able to park.

Today, coming off the motorway after a 90min drive, and as I was coming to a stop, the gearbox clunked, and I was stuck in 3rd. Pulled over, restarted engine and it all fine for the rest of the journey.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

TIA.

Hey buddy, this is worst case scenario, my dad had the same problem with his 2009, it was the gear box shift sensor, it's a gearbox out job, total bill was about £1500

However it could also be something completely different, buy to fully diagnose it you'll need to get it to an indy or MB

Ouch. Then I’m hoping it’s something completely different, or more importantly, a lot cheaper! 🤣

How many miles on the car, how old is it and when was the last time the transmission was serviced or fluid level checked ?

It’s an ‘09 with 120k and I’ve not got a record of it ever being checked. I’ve ordered the specific dipstick, as I understand there is no other way to check the level.

If levels OK it could be the electro plate, if so a good Auto Trans Garage can get yours repaired as opposed to a new plate... Had this on my 5g box several years ago!

Hope it is just your level, but if only that, get the oil and filter changed as insurance..

Specialist dipstick arrived today, checked level at operating temp and it was at the lowest line. I will top up and see how that fairs, and get it fully serviced if it seems to be the problem.

will report back findings. Thanks guys.
